will be known. Thus, knowing the scriptures and knowing the world, one will properly and truly seek all dharmas. By seeking in this way, one will be able to cut off all the doubts of all sentient beings. If one is able to do so, by cutting off the doubts of others, one will manifestly increase through merit and will perfect the accumulation of merit. One will also manifestly increase from wisdom, thereby perfecting the accumulation of wisdom. If one perfects the accumulations, one will engage in cultivating the dharma that accords with the aspects of enlightenment in a truthful manner, and one will thoroughly know the means of cultivation. If one strives in this way, that cultivation will completely lead to the complete nirvana of the Great Vehicle, but not to the complete nirvana of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Thus, being skilled in means, one will also retain what has been heard spoken by all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and dharmas that have not been heard before will also appear to them in all aspects through the power of cultivation. Therefore, endowed with retention and fearlessness, one practices in order to abandon all objects of focus through the three doors of liberation. If one practices in this way, one is engaging in abandoning the perverse pride of self and others, and this is the perfect practice in all its aspects. One who has engaged in this way will become superior to all sentient beings, Hearers, and Solitary Buddhas through the distinction of the qualities of practice and the distinction of the qualities of benefit. Among these, the distinction of the qualities of practice is that Bodhisattvas, having engaged for the benefit of themselves and others, regard the benefit of others as their own need, whereas Hearers and Solitary Buddhas do not regard the benefit of others as their own need in this way. They have equanimity towards all sentient beings, and because they have equanimity, they always act for the sake of benefiting them, and they do not expect to be benefited in return. Striving in this way, they always wish for those beings to have benefit and happiness. Thus, possessing the thought of benefit and happiness, they connect those beings with having fruit. In this way, this person has accomplished the distinction of the qualities of practice that are increasingly superior. That

The distinction of the merits of benefits is that Bodhisattvas receive prophecies from the Buddhas, but not Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Receiving a prophecy means abiding in the irreversible stage. Abiding in that stage means attaining the Dharma nature of not forgetting what needs to be done and what always needs to be done. Thus, having become the Dharma nature of not forgetting, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas regard and praise them as the best of all sentient beings. All actions are not completely neglected. Even the neglect of what has not been attained will not lead to complete neglect. If not completely neglected, virtuous Dharmas will always increase without ceasing, like the waxing moon, and one will become a true Bodhisattva, not a pretended one. If one becomes a true Bodhisattva, one will know all the methods of taming in every way. If one knows, one will become skilled in all the classifications of what is sought, what is sought for, and by what means it is sought. One will also classify how the seeking is ultimately achieved. If one is skilled in classification, one will be skilled in oral instructions. If one is skilled in oral instructions, one will attain the king of samadhi with limitless objects. Having attained that samadhi, one will be able to teach the Dharma that has fruits. Teaching in various ways, one makes it fruitful. One will also definitely arise from the Mahayana. If one definitely arises from the Mahayana, one will also gather the Mahayana. At that time of definitely arising from the Mahayana, one will receive that name. All the worlds, as well as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, will also give a name common to all Bodhisattvas and praise them. One should know that these are the distinctions of benefits. Those with such names are the signs of Bodhisattvas. With whatever signs one is endowed, that practice can be done in every way, whether in the aspect of a householder or a renunciate. Practice can be done in both aspects.

If one does so, then the one who makes practice the essence will definitely become one who has a strong intention towards the side of virtue. With such an intention, until the end of existence, either fully accepting the householder's status or fully accepting the ordained status, one will be engaged in the side of virtue. From then on, wherever one goes, one will associate with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and will consciously take birth for the benefit of sentient beings. For him, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will constantly and continuously rely on teachings, and thus he will experience the state of attaining the distinction of the side of virtue. Because of experiencing that benefit, he will enter into that state of attaining distinction in the manner of a householder. If the mind abides in that state, it will strive in every way for the distinguished states, from higher to higher, until the ultimate, and will not know satisfaction. If one strives in that way, one will attain the ultimate state, and from then on, one can no longer be fully sought, because one has attained the unsurpassed state. The sequence of the Bodhisattva ground is complete. Translated, corrected, and finalized by the Indian Abbot Prajñāvarman and the revising translator Bande Yeshede. There are six thousand seven hundred and fifty shlokas. From the Bodhisattva-bhumi of the Yogācārabhūmi, Asaṅga.
