Yogacarabhumi's Bodhisattva-bhumi. Asanga. Yogacarabhumi's Bodhisattva-bhumi. Asanga. Yogacarabhumi's Bodhisattva-bhumi. Volume 1. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Homage to the noble Maitreya! These ten dharmas are those that gather the Mahayana Bodhisattva path and its fruits. What are the ten? They are the basis, the sign, the direction, the superior intention, the abiding, the birth, the upholding, the ground, the conduct, and the ultimate abiding. The summary verse says: Basis, sign, and all directions, Superior intention and abiding, Birth and upholding, and the ground, Conduct and ultimate abiding are the last. What is the basis? Here, the Bodhisattva's own lineage, and the initial generation of the mind, and all the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, are called the basis. Why is that? Here, the Bodhisattva relies on and abides in the lineage, becoming one who has the potential to manifest complete unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and becomes capable. Therefore, the lineage is called the basis of having potential. Here, the Bodhisattva relies on and abides in the initial generation of the mind, and also engages in giving. And also engages in the perfections of ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. Thus, engaging in the six perfections, the accumulation of merit and the accumulation of wisdom, and all the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment. Therefore, the initial generation of the mind is called the basis for the Bodhisattva's engagement in conduct. Here, the Bodhisattva relies on and abides in that very engagement in the Bodhisattva's conduct, becoming one who completely perfects unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. Therefore, that engagement in the Bodhisattva's conduct is called the basis for the complete great enlightenment. If a person does not abide in the lineage, one without lineage, even if they generate the mind and abide in diligence, they cannot

Therefore, there is no fortune to fully accomplish perfect enlightenment. Thus, by this means, even if a Bodhisattva has not generated the mind of enlightenment, nor engaged in the practice of a Bodhisattva, it should be understood that the lineage is the foundation. If one abides in the lineage but does not generate the mind of enlightenment, nor engage in the practices of a Bodhisattva, then even if one has fortune, one will not quickly attain enlightenment. Conversely, it should be understood that one will quickly attain it. That lineage is also called foundation, reliance, cause, support, proximity, leader, and place. Just like the lineage, the initial generation of the mind of enlightenment, and all the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, are also the same as this. So, what is lineage? In short, there are two types: naturally abiding and truly accomplished. Among these, the naturally abiding lineage refers to the distinction of the six sense bases (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind) of the Bodhisattvas, which is transmitted from one to another, having a beginningless time, and is obtained by the nature of reality. Among these, the truly accomplished lineage refers to what is obtained from previously habituating to roots of virtue. In this context of meaning, both are accepted. That lineage is also called seed, and that element is also called nature. Among these, the fruit has not yet been truly accomplished, because there is no fruit, so it is a small part. The fruit has already been truly accomplished, because it has fruit, so it is coarse. Those who possess the Bodhisattva lineage even surpass all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, let alone all other sentient beings, and should be known as unsurpassed and excellent. What is the reason for this? In short, there are two types of purification: the purification of the obscuration of afflictions and the purification of the obscuration of knowledge. Among these, the lineage of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas becomes pure through the purification of the obscuration of afflictions, but not through the purification of the obscuration of knowledge. The lineage of Bodhisattvas is also through the purification of the obscuration of afflictions and the purification of the obscuration of knowledge.
