For the sake of being completely pure. Therefore, it is called the unsurpassed, which is superior to all. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas are known to be superior to Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas in four ways. What are the four? They are those arising from faculties, those arising from practice, those arising from wisdom, and those arising from results. Among these, the distinction arising from faculties is this: Bodhisattvas are naturally sharp in their faculties, Pratyekabuddhas have middling faculties, and Śrāvakas have dull faculties. Among these, the distinction arising from practice is this: Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas enter the path for their own benefit, while Bodhisattvas enter the path for their own benefit as well, for the benefit of others, for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, with love for the world, and for the sake of the benefit, welfare, and happiness of the majority of beings, including gods and humans. Among these, the distinction arising from wisdom is this: Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas are skilled in the aggregates, elements, sense bases, dependent origination, what is and is not possible, and the truths, while Bodhisattvas are skilled in these and all other fields of knowledge. Among these, the distinction arising from results is this: Śrāvakas attain the result of Śrāvaka-bodhi, Pratyekabuddhas attain the result of Pratyekabuddha-bodhi, while Bodhisattvas attain the result of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. How do others know, "This is a Bodhisattva"? There are six signs of having the lineage of the Bodhisattva perfections: the sign of the lineage of the perfection of generosity, the sign of the lineage of morality, patience, diligence, meditation, and the perfection of wisdom. Among these, the sign of the lineage of the perfection of generosity of a Bodhisattva is this: Bodhisattvas are naturally fond of generosity, and if they possess things that can be given, they always

He is one who constantly shares his possessions with others, giving with a very joyful heart, and not with an unhappy heart. Even if it is little, he shares it, giving good things, not bad things. It is said that he refrains from taking what is not given, and does not give alms. He also speaks of the merits of giving to others, and makes them want to give alms. Even when he sees someone who is able to give alms, he is delighted and content. He also rises and offers seats to the lamas, elders, benefactors, and those who deserve respect. Whether asked or not about the affairs of sentient beings, he gives them the reasonable advice that will make them happy in this world and the next. He gives fearlessness to sentient beings who are frightened by kings, enemies, thieves, fire, water, etc., and protects them as much as he can from all kinds of terrible fears. Even if he is entrusted with the property of others, he does not abandon it. Even if he owes someone else money, he does not cheat or abandon it. He does not deceive his own family lineage, nor does he seek quarrels. If he is confused and bewildered by the appearance of objects such as jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, conch shells, agate, coral, gold, silver, stone marrow, spug (unclear what it is), rubies, right-handed conch shells, etc., and he correctly understands how not to be deceived by others, how could he want to deceive himself? By nature, he is fond of great enjoyment, and he puts his mind to all great enjoyment and consumption. He is fond of great deeds, not small gatherings. These are the things that are indulged in in the world, such as: indulging in women, indulging in alcohol, indulging in gambling, actors, dancers, comedians, and coquetry.

Entering into observing actions and so on, from entering into these actions, one quickly obtains freedom from attachment, and will show shame and embarrassment. Even if one obtains great wealth, one will not be too greedy, let alone small amounts. Therefore, these similar actions should be recognized as signs of the lineage of the Bodhisattva's Perfection of Giving. The signs of the lineage of the Bodhisattva's Perfection of Discipline are these: A Bodhisattva is by nature endowed with minor non-virtuous actions of body and speech, but not very strong, nor greatly harmful to sentient beings. Even if one has committed a negative action, one will quickly regret it, and will act cautiously, not happily. Towards sentient beings, one has the nature of not harming with hands, sticks, staffs, weapons, and so on. By nature, one is agreeable and joyful towards sentient beings. Towards those who deserve respect, one will also respectfully speak in due time, prostrate, stand up, join palms, and serve with acts of bowing. One will be harmonious, good at understanding, and will conform to the minds of others. One will always smile first, have a smiling face, be without anger, and speak frankly. Towards those who benefit sentient beings, one will be grateful and know gratitude. Towards begging sentient beings, one will be honest, and will not deceive them with deceit and hypocrisy. One will acquire wealth in accordance with the Dharma, and not in a way that is not in accordance with the Dharma. By nature, one is also fond of merit, and if others do merit, one will also praise them, let alone doing it oneself. For example, even if one sees or hears others killing, binding, cutting, beating, insulting, threatening, and so on, one will be very distressed by the harm done to others. One greatly values correctly receiving the Dharma, and values the next life, even the slightest fault.
