Therefore, being virtuous and good, possessing goodness and white Dharma, therefore, the state of Tathagata is so difficult to arise, becoming the main, inconceivable, immovable, unsurpassed cause. If it is not so, then it will not work. As long as the Bodhisattva has not completely or partially become one of the four proximate afflictions that are contrary to the white Dharma, he will naturally possess these good Dharmas. When he becomes a proximate affliction, he no longer pays attention to these white Dharmas, and sometimes he falls into evil destinies. Even if the Bodhisattva falls into evil destinies, it should be known that due to the transformation of lineage, he is more superior than other beings who have fallen into evil destinies. Here, the Bodhisattva, from a long-term perspective, falls into evil destinies hundreds out of hundreds of times, and even if he falls into evil destinies, he can quickly be liberated from evil destinies. Unlike other beings who fall into evil destinies, he does not experience the intense suffering of evil destinies, and even if he comes into contact with very small suffering, he will generate more aversion. For those suffering beings born there, also driven by the lineage of the cause of the Buddha's great compassion, a heart of compassion will arise. Similar to this, the Bodhisattva who falls into evil destinies, it should be known that he is more superior than other beings who have fallen into evil destinies. So, what are the four proximate afflictions of the Bodhisattva that are contrary to the white Dharma? Previously being careless, being accustomed to afflictions, the afflictions being strong and lasting, this is the first proximate affliction. Being foolish, not intelligent, relying on bad friends, this is the second proximate affliction. Being strongly oppressed by teachers, lords, kings, thieves, heretics, etc., being unable to be autonomous, and the confusion of mind, this is

is the third of the near afflictions. To be without possessions and to look to livelihood, this is the fourth of the near afflictions. Even if one possesses the lineage of a Bodhisattva, one will not be able to fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment due to four causes. What are the four? Here, a Bodhisattva, from the very beginning, does not encounter a virtuous friend, a Buddha or a Bodhisattva, who truly teaches the path to enlightenment, this is the first cause. Furthermore, even if a Bodhisattva encounters a virtuous friend, they hold the Bodhisattva's trainings in a perverted way and practice them in a perverted way, this is the second cause. Furthermore, even if a Bodhisattva encounters a virtuous friend and does not practice the Bodhisattva's trainings in a perverted way, they are negligent and lazy in that practice, and for the most part, they do not possess constant diligence, this is the third cause. Furthermore, even if a Bodhisattva encounters a virtuous friend and truly practices the Bodhisattva's trainings, and has already begun to exert effort, they have not long accustomed themselves to the dharmas that are conducive to enlightenment, therefore their faculties are not fully matured, and the qualities conducive to enlightenment are not fully perfected, this is the fourth cause. Even if one possesses the lineage, one will not attain enlightenment because one possesses these causes, but if one does not possess these causes, one will attain it. If one does not have the lineage, then in all ways, in all aspects, it should be understood that it is impossible to attain enlightenment. From the Bodhisattva-bhumi-yoga-sthāna, the chapter on Lineage is the first. Here, the initial generation of the mind of a Bodhisattva is the first of the true aspirations among all the virtuous aspirations of a Bodhisattva, for it gathers together the other true aspirations. Therefore, it is the very nature of the first true aspiration. When that Bodhisattva makes aspirations with the mind for enlightenment, they focus their mind in this way and also speak these words: Alas! May I awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlig

May I be fully enlightened! Also doing the deeds of all sentient beings, and establishing them in the ultimate peace and the wisdom of the Tathagatas, thus, thus, when I accomplish my own enlightenment and the benefit of sentient beings, I generate the mind. Therefore, generating the mind is the aspect of accomplishment. That generating of the mind is also done by focusing on that enlightenment and the benefit of sentient beings, it is not without a focus. Therefore, that generating of the mind is focusing on enlightenment and focusing on the benefit of sentient beings. That generating of the mind is also because it goes as the beginning of gathering all the roots of virtue on the side of enlightenment, it possesses the qualities of virtue, supreme virtue, goodness, supreme goodness, excellence, supreme excellence, and it is contrary to the practice of the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind that rely on all sentient beings. For example, that first generating of the mind of a Bodhisattva is the supreme and unsurpassed of true aspirations among all the virtuous deeds of true aspirations on the matters of mundane and supramundane things other than that. Thus, that first generating of the mind should also be known from its own nature. The five characteristics should also be known from its aspect, focus, qualities, and distinction. A Bodhisattva, as soon as that mind is generated, enters the unsurpassed Great Vehicle of enlightenment, for example, by way of indication and terminology, he also enters the count called Bodhisattva, therefore, that generating of the mind is included in entering. A Bodhisattva, after generating that mind, gradually manifests and attains the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, it is not without generating it. Therefore, that generating of the mind is the root of the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. A Bodhisattva has compassion for suffering sentient beings, and thinking of protecting them also generates that mind, therefore, that generating of the mind is the similar cause of compassion.
