And the suffering arising from disability and the loss of limbs, and the suffering arising from killing, imprisoning, cutting, beating, and expelling, and so on. Among these, the suffering arising from association refers to the suffering of the eight worldly dharmas, that is, the destruction of the dharma of destruction, the exhaustion of the dharma of exhaustion, the aging of the dharma of aging, the sickness of the dharma of sickness, the death of the dharma of death, and the suffering arising from not obtaining, being unpleasant, or being slandered. These eight kinds of suffering, as well as the suffering of desire, are called the suffering arising from association. Among these, the suffering of all kinds refers to the suffering that is contrary to the five kinds of happiness as previously stated, that is, the suffering of cause, the suffering of feeling, the suffering of joylessness, the suffering of continuous feeling, manifestation, remoteness, near peace, and the opposition to the happiness of perfect enlightenment, the discriminations arising from householders and the desire realm and pervasive action, and the suffering of ordinary beings should be known as the fifth. These five kinds of suffering, as well as those arising from harm, those arising from lack of resources, those arising from bodily discomfort, those arising from the alteration of joy, and the five sufferings of the evil destinies of the afflictions that are practiced in the three realms, combined with the previous five kinds, these ten kinds of suffering are called all kinds. Thus, if the previous fifty-five kinds and these fifty-five kinds are combined, they become one hundred and ten kinds of suffering, which are the objects of compassion of the Bodhisattvas, and through that object, the compassion of the Bodhisattvas arises and increases, and the practice is perfected. From that great mass of suffering, great compassion will arise from focusing on nineteen kinds of suffering. What are the nineteen kinds of suffering? That is, the ignorance of maturation,

Suffering, the suffering belonging to the suffering of formation, constant suffering, the suffering of cause, the suffering of birth, the suffering of self-inflicted harm, the suffering of broken precepts, the suffering of broken views, the suffering arising from previous causes, great suffering, the suffering of sentient beings in hell, the suffering belonging to the good realms, all the sufferings arising from those who have entered wrongly, all the sufferings of entering, the suffering of ignorance, the suffering arising from increase, the suffering arising from subsequent connection, the suffering of feeling, and the suffering of bad rebirths. Compassion, in this case, is called great compassion for four reasons: it arises from focusing on the deep and subtle suffering of sentient beings that is difficult to understand; it has been familiar for a long time, having been accustomed to it for hundreds of thousands of eons; and it also enters the object with intense effort. The Bodhisattva who possesses such effort and is seized by compassion, for the sake of removing the suffering of sentient beings, would give up even a hundred of his own lives, let alone one life. What need is there to mention the necessities of the body? He will also take upon himself all forms of harm caused by suffering. It is also extremely pure, for example, the Bodhisattva grounds of the ultimate Bodhisattvas are also extremely pure, and likewise, the Tathagata grounds of the Tathagatas are also extremely pure. Those Bodhisattvas who cultivate compassion for sentient beings with these one hundred and ten kinds of suffering, those Bodhisattvas are cultivating all the compassion of the Bodhisattvas. They will also quickly attain the pure intention of compassion that enters the ground of pure intention. Sentient beings also possess a very soft heart, a loving heart, a heart that wants to benefit, a heart without weariness, a heart that takes on suffering, and a heart that is capable and free.

No. How can a noble Śrāvaka who possesses the realization of the truth of suffering, and whose mind-stream is ultimately distant from a mind of renunciation, enter in the same way as a Bodhisattva who, with a mind preceded by great compassion for sentient beings, truly sees the great mass of suffering gathered in one hundred and ten ways? A Bodhisattva who has thus subdued his mind with compassion does not completely abandon anything, whether internal or external. There is no precept of morality that he does not properly take. There is nothing that he cannot endure when it comes to harming others. There is no diligence that he does not undertake. There is no meditation that he does not enter into. There is no wisdom that he does not engage in. Therefore, if one were to ask the Tathāgatas, "Where does the Bodhisattva's Bodhi reside?" they would rightly prophesy, "The Bodhisattva's Bodhi resides in compassion." Here, each of the immeasurable qualities of a Bodhisattva, as taught, enters into perfection through the perfection of immeasurability, because it gathers immeasurable fruits, is completely upheld, is definitely singular, and is entered into by immeasurable qualities that are virtuous and without fault. It should be understood that there are four benefits to a Bodhisattva's diligence in meditating on the immeasurable in this way: that meditating on the immeasurable will, in the very beginning, lead to abiding in supreme bliss in this life; that it will gather and increase an immeasurable accumulation of merit; that it will make the mind steadfast in unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment; and that it will lead to experiencing all suffering in saṃsāra for the sake of sentient beings. The sixteenth chapter, on offerings, service, and the immeasurable, from the section on the yoga grounds of the Bodhisattva-bhūmi. Volume fourteen. Summary: Shame, steadfastness, and non-weariness, Likewise, the teachings, knowledge of the world, Skillful in exposition, Likewise, individual correct knowledge, Accumulations and aspects of enlightenment, Tranquility and insight, Skillful in means, And dhāraṇīs.
