For example, sons and so on are metaphors, and the suffering arising from other harms is like this: being struck by others with hands and feet, etc., and being seized by flesh flies and long-mouthed flies, etc., and the suffering of abiding in a single mode of conduct. The nine kinds of suffering are: the suffering of one's own decline, the suffering of others' decline, the suffering of relatives' decline, the suffering of the decline of possessions, the suffering of declining from being without illness, the suffering of the decline of discipline, the suffering of the decline of views, the suffering of this life, and the suffering of the next life. The ten kinds of suffering are: the suffering of lacking bodily necessities such as food, drink, riding animals, clothing, ornaments, and utensils; the suffering of lacking incense, flower garlands, and ointments; the suffering of lacking the necessities of dance, song, and musical instruments; the suffering of lacking illuminating objects; and the tenth is the suffering of lacking bodily necessities for men and women to enjoy pleasures. Furthermore, suffering should be understood as ninefold: all suffering, great suffering, suffering from all doors, wrong conduct suffering, entering suffering, suffering caused by unwanted actions, impoverished suffering, suffering arising from subsequent connections, and suffering of all kinds. Among these, all suffering arises from previous causes and from present conditions. Among these, great suffering is prolonged, unbearable, diverse, and continuous. Among these, suffering from all doors includes sentient beings in hells, the realm of animals, the world of hungry ghosts, and those belonging to the happy realms. Among these, wrong conduct suffering includes being harmed by others in this life, and the arising of harming others, and the complete arising, and the complete arising of suffering caused by imbalance of the body due to eating incompatible foods, and the suffering caused by oneself unreasonably causing suffering in this life, which is one's own.

That which brings about all suffering, and improper attention, and mostly abiding in that, therefore one will experience the suffering of being entangled by afflictions and near afflictions, and because of mostly engaging in misdeeds of body, speech, and mind, in the future one will experience the suffering of falling into the lower realms. The suffering of entering into that arises from six kinds of uncertainty: when wandering in samsara, the body is uncertain, from becoming a king to becoming a poor person; parents are uncertain; children and spouses are uncertain; servants and maids and laborers and living on leftovers are uncertain; friends and advisors and relatives and in-laws are uncertain, these arise from wandering in samsara. From becoming parents, to broadly speaking friends and advisors and relatives and in-laws, at other times when wandering in samsara, one becomes a killer, a retaliator, and an enemy. When wandering in samsara, enjoyment is uncertain, from becoming someone with great enjoyment, to later at other times becoming extremely poor. The suffering caused by the unwanted is that which arises from wanting to be long-lived but involuntarily becoming short-lived; wanting to be handsome but involuntarily becoming ugly; wanting to be born into a high caste but involuntarily being born into a low caste; wanting to be wealthy but involuntarily becoming poor; wanting to be strong but involuntarily becoming weak; wanting to know knowledge but involuntarily using ignorant knowledge; wanting to defeat others, but involuntarily one's self being defeated, that is the suffering. The suffering of deprivation is that which arises from the decrease of children and spouses etc. of householders; the suffering that arises from the increase of afflictions such as desire etc. of renunciates; and the suffering that is afflicted by famine, afflicted by enemy armies, afflicted by the fear of going to solitary places and valleys; and the suffering of living dependent on others.
