Therefore, it should be recognized that that is impartial love. Just as love focused on sentient beings, love focused on Dharma, and impartial love are, so too should compassion, joy, and equanimity be understood to be the same. Among these, the Bodhisattva, starting with sentient beings who are afflicted with suffering, cultivates the mind endowed with compassion, which is the superior intention to eliminate suffering in the ten directions; that is their compassion. Starting with sentient beings who possess happiness, they cultivate the mind endowed with joy, which is the superior intention to rejoice in happiness in the ten directions; that is their joy. In the ten directions, for sentient beings who are neither suffering nor happy, as well as for the three types of beings who possess suffering and possess happiness, through these three types of beings, they eliminate afflictions in order, namely ignorance, hatred, and attachment, with the superior intention endowed with equanimity; this is their equanimity. Among these, the Bodhisattva's immeasurable qualities such as love, which are focused on sentient beings, are common to other non-Buddhists. Those that are focused on Dharma are common to Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but it should be recognized that they are not common to non-Buddhists. The Bodhisattva's impartial immeasurable qualities should be recognized as not being common to non-Buddhists, Hearers, and Solitary Buddhas at all. Among these, the Bodhisattva's immeasurable qualities of love, compassion, and joy should be recognized as being encompassed by the superior intention to bring about happiness. One immeasurable quality should be recognized as being encompassed by the superior intention to bring about benefit, namely equanimity. All of the Bodhisattva's immeasurable qualities are to be regarded with compassion, and therefore, Bodhisattvas who possess those qualities are called compassionate ones. Among these, Bodhisattvas, seeing one hundred and ten types of suffering in the realm of sentient beings, therefore cultivate compassion for sentient beings. What are the one hundred and ten types of suffering? One type of suffering is

Beginning with the suffering of entering without interruption, all sentient beings possess the suffering of belonging to that entry. The two kinds of suffering are rooted in desire: the suffering that arises from the change and alteration of pleasurable things; and the suffering of maturation that is ignorance, namely, when the body is afflicted by intense feelings, there is delusion about the body as being "I" or "mine," thereby causing extreme sorrow, and thus experiencing the dual pain of physical and mental feelings. The three kinds of suffering are the suffering of suffering, the suffering of conditioning, and the suffering of change. The four kinds of suffering are the suffering of separation, which is what arises from separation from loved ones; the suffering of cessation, which is what arises from death, the abandonment of similar beings; the continuous suffering, which is what arises from the passing from one life to another after death; and the perpetual suffering, which is the five aggregates of appropriation of sentient beings who are of a nature that does not transcend sorrow. The five kinds of suffering are the suffering that is closely associated with the causes of craving for desire; hatred; torpor; sleep; excitement; regret; and the suffering that is closely associated with the causes of doubt. The six kinds of suffering are: the suffering of cause, due to relying on the cause of bad destinies; the suffering of result, due to being born in bad destinies; the suffering of thoroughly seeking, beginning with enjoyment; the suffering of guarding; the suffering of not knowing satisfaction; and the suffering of disappearing. In brief, these are the six kinds of suffering. The seven kinds of suffering are: the suffering of birth; aging; sickness; death; encountering unpleasant things; being separated from pleasant things; and the desire that is sought but not found, that too is suffering. The eight kinds of suffering are: the suffering of cold; the suffering of heat; the suffering of hunger; the suffering of thirst; the suffering of not being free; and the suffering of harming oneself, such as nakedness.
