Being endowed with everything, the activities of a virtuous friend are meaningful in five ways. That is, from the beginning, one desires to benefit and bring happiness to others. That benefit and happiness are also fully understood as they truly are. In this, the mind does not become inverted. Whatever method and way of teaching the Dharma can subdue any sentient being, one has the ability and power to do so, and one's mind is not completely weary. There is no partiality towards all sentient beings, whether they are inferior, intermediate, or especially superior; compassion is equal. Therefore, that virtuous friend abides on the basis of faith in five ways. Because even hearing his words, others greatly admire him, what need is there to mention seeing him directly? His conduct is very peaceful, he possesses conduct, and all limbs and minor limbs are endowed with complete and unchanging conduct. The movement of the limits of body, speech, and mind is stable, without roughness or change. For the sake of pretending to others, having separately examined conduct, there is no pretense of not pretending like stability. One does not generate displeasure from others' Dharma talks or gain and respect, but even if one obtains vast gain and respect when others request me to give Dharma talks, one allows others to request with an unwavering and joyful mind, and one also bestows the Dharma talks and gain and respect to others. Just as my own gain and respect make me content, one is even more extremely satisfied with others' gain and others' respect, without jealousy. One reduces utensils and possessions, and one completely relinquishes all acquired wealth, thus reducing possessions. Therefore, one who has become a virtuous friend of a Bodhisattva performs the activities of a virtuous friend from other trainees in five ways: speaking, reminding, admonishing, subsequently indicating, and teaching the Dharma. The detailed distinctions of those words are as follows: one should understand from the Hearer's Ground. Instructions and subsequent

The doctrine is, even more particularly, like this: it should be understood from the chapter on the race of power. Therein, a Bodhisattva relies on a spiritual friend, which should be fully understood in four ways: attending to the sick from time to time, doing ordinary service, with love, respect, and joy; speaking respectfully from time to time, prostrating, rising to greet, joining palms, bowing, making offerings; offering with gifts of clothes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine for illness, and utensils that are in accordance with the Dharma; settling down and properly arranging, arranging to have dominion over the meaning in accordance with the Dharma, remaining unshaken and truly as it is; going with the thought of knowing the time, attending, asking, and listening. Therein, a Bodhisattva who wishes to hear the Dharma from a spiritual friend should listen to the Dharma with five kinds of perception: with the meaning of rarity, as the perception of a jewel; with the meaning of the nature of the cause of obtaining vast innate wisdom, as the perception of the eye; with the meaning of fully revealing all knowable things as they are, even without obtaining innate wisdom, as the perception of light; with the meaning of the reality of the cause of obtaining Nirvana and the supreme state of perfect enlightenment, as the perception of fruit and great benefit; with the meaning of the reality of the cause of the great joy of tranquility and insight that thoroughly distinguishes Nirvana and the Dharma of perfect enlightenment that have not been obtained in this life, as the perception of joy without fault. Therein, when a Bodhisattva hears the Dharma from a spiritual friend, one should not focus on the speaker in five ways, but listen attentively, listening to the Dharma with a joyful mind. Do not focus on the broken precepts, thinking, "This person has broken precepts and does not abide in discipline, I should not listen to him," do not think like that. Also, do not focus on low caste, thinking
