What is the difficult diligence of a Bodhisattva? This should be viewed in three aspects. For example, a Bodhisattva does not cling to the notion of clothing, the notion of food, bedding, or the notion of a seat, nor does he cling to the notion of self, but constantly and continuously engages in the practice of virtuous dharmas. This is the first difficult diligence of a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva engages in such diligence at all times until he has not abandoned his own kind. This is the second difficult diligence of a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva possesses the qualities of understanding equality, is neither too discouraged nor too hasty, but possesses diligence that is not inverted and is meaningful. This should be understood as the third difficult diligence of a Bodhisattva. It should be known that the causes for Bodhisattvas to accumulate this difficult diligence are strength, compassion for sentient beings, and wisdom. So, what is the diligence of Bodhisattvas from all aspects? This should be viewed in four aspects: abandoning afflictive dharmas, practicing white dharmas, purifying karma, and increasing wisdom. Among these, the diligence of a Bodhisattva in abandoning afflictive dharmas is to prevent the arising of bonds, fetters, latent tendencies, near afflictions, and entanglements that have not yet arisen; and to abandon those that have already arisen. Among these, the diligence of a Bodhisattva in practicing white dharmas is the diligence to generate virtuous dharmas that have not yet arisen; and to maintain, not diminish, increase, and expand those that have already arisen. Among these, the diligence of a Bodhisattva in purifying karma is to purify and accumulate the three karmas of body, speech, and mind. Among these, the diligence of a Bodhisattva in

That which causes the increase of knowledge is the wisdom arising from hearing, thinking, and meditating, which correctly accomplishes and increases. What, then, is the diligence of a noble Bodhisattva? This should be viewed in five ways: because one does not abandon all aspirations and actions, it is non-abandonment; as one has taken up, either equally or with even greater diligence, it is non-degradation; because one initiates diligence in action, for a long time, and continuously, without the mind being timid and without laziness, it is non-timidity; because one is completely sustained by meaningful methods, it is non-reversal; because one quickly moves towards unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, it is the diligence of Bodhisattvas who persevere and act. What, then, is the diligence of all types of Bodhisattvas? It is six types and seven types, which, when combined, should be understood as thirteen types: because one constantly acts, it is constant diligence; because one acts with reverence, it is respectful diligence; because it arises from the power of previous causes, it is diligence in accordance with causes; because one separately examines and acts in the direction of virtue, it is diligence arising from action; because one is not disturbed by all the harms of suffering and cannot be changed, it is unwavering diligence; because one is not satisfied with small attainments and minor benefits, it is diligence of non-contentment. These, for the moment, are the six types of all types of diligence. If one possesses these, one is called a Bodhisattva who initiates diligence in virtuous dharmas, possesses power, possesses diligence, possesses joy, is steadfast and firm, and does not abandon diligence. The seven types are increasingly aspiring towards unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and continuously increasing aspirations, so it is the diligence of a Bodhisattva possessing aspiration; with diligence, a Bodhisattva is in harmony with virtuous dharmas.

Will abide in yoga, and any affliction or near affliction will not make the mind afflicted, and will possess the appropriate diligence of a Bodhisattva without pervasive entanglement, and any near affliction will make the mind near affliction, and in order to abandon the near affliction that pervasively entangles the mind, the diligence that is like extinguishing a fire burning on the head is the special diligence of a Bodhisattva, and in order to completely seek all fields of knowledge, the seeking diligence of a Bodhisattva, and for those dharmas that have been completely sought, how to conform and how appropriately to diligently practice the dharma that accords with the dharma, is the learning diligence of a Bodhisattva, and the diligence of a Bodhisattva to benefit others should be viewed as eleven types as before. Protecting one's own true yoga and correcting mistakes according to the dharma is the seventh diligence of a Bodhisattva, and these thirteen types are called the diligence of all types of Bodhisattvas. The diligence of Bodhisattvas in poverty and desire, and the diligence to become happy in this life and the next, should be viewed as patience. The difference is that what is called patience there should be called joy of diligence here. So, what is the pure diligence of a Bodhisattva? In short, it should be understood as ten types: suitability, familiarity, non-distraction, good grasp, diligence in practicing at the right time, having the ability to recognize signs, being without cowardice, being without lack, equanimity, and complete dedication to great Bodhi. Here, in order to abandon the faults and afflictions that are severely harmed by any near afflictions, the Bodhisattva relies on appropriate antidotes, for example, for desire, cultivating impurity as an antidote to desire, for hatred, cultivating loving-kindness, for ignorance, cultivating this
