What need is there to mention those who are seen to be associated with decline? When he sees it in this way, he should train correctly in this way: In order to eliminate the suffering of sentient beings who are always associated with suffering, I should seek it, but I should not do it in order to accomplish suffering. When he attends to it properly in this way, the perception of happiness will disappear, and the perception of suffering will arise. Relying on that perception of suffering, he does not care about all the harm that others do, and he can endure it. How does the Bodhisattva cultivate the perception of cherishing sentient beings who harm sentient beings? Here, the Bodhisattva should train correctly in this way: When I generate the mind of enlightenment, I should benefit all sentient beings, and I should cherish all sentient beings as if they were my wives. After I have cherished all sentient beings in this way, and I do good for them, if they harm me instead, and I cannot be indifferent to the harm, this should not be my behavior. When he attends to it properly in this way, he will not have the perception of seeing others as sentient beings who harm sentient beings, but he will abide in the perception of cherishing them. Relying on that perception of cherishing, he does not care about all the harm that others do, and he can endure it. What is patience? It is not being angry, not harming back, and not holding on to hatred in the mind. This is called patience. What is the Bodhisattva's patience of accepting suffering? Here, the Bodhisattva should train correctly in this way: When I was previously engaged in the practice of enjoying desires, and I was seeking desires everywhere, even though I knew that it was the cause of suffering, I engaged in agriculture, commerce, and serving the king for the sake of desires, which are the nature of suffering, and thus I endured and accepted many intense sufferings, and I experienced them myself. Those were all meaningless, and even though I knew that it was for suffering, I endured great suffering because of the fault of ignorance. Now I should accomplish happiness.

If one feels that entering into virtuous deeds, enduring and experiencing suffering hundreds of millions of times greater than that is insignificant, what need is there to consider it smaller? A Bodhisattva who has entered the path to enlightenment thus properly directs his mind and endures the suffering arising from all bases. What is the suffering arising from all bases? In short, it can be recognized as eight types: relying on dwelling, relying on worldly dharmas, relying on conduct, relying on upholding the Dharma, relying on living by begging, relying on fatigue from diligent effort, relying on benefiting sentient beings, and relying on temporary affairs. Dwelling is the basis, relying on which, having renounced and taken full ordination from the well-spoken Vinaya, one becomes the property of a Bhikshu, such as: Dharma robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine and utensils for the sick. The Bodhisattva will not be displeased if these are bad, scarce, disrespectful, or obtained with difficulty, nor will he be completely discouraged, nor will he abandon the fundamental diligence. Thus, he endures the suffering of relying on dwelling. Worldly dharmas are nine: not obtaining, displeasure, slander, suffering, the dharma of destruction being destroyed, the dharma of exhaustion being exhausted, the dharma of aging aging, the dharma of sickness being sick, the dharma of death dying. When all or individual of these worldly dharmas come and manifest, whatever suffering arises from that is called relying on worldly dharmas. Although the Bodhisattva is struck by these, he will not abandon the fundamental diligence because of it, but will separately examine, uphold, and endure. Conduct is four: walking, standing, sitting, and sleeping. The Bodhisattva, through the two conducts of walking and sitting, purifies his mind day and night from the obscured dharmas, and endures the suffering of fatigue arising from that, and does not lie down on a bed or small bed at an inappropriate time.
