Being without fault because of abandoning the two extremes, being in accordance with the place of great joy, and always practicing because one does not abandon the training until the end of life, and being steadfast because one is not overcome or robbed by gain, respect, attacks from others, afflictions, and near afflictions, and possessing the adornment of ethics. The adornment of ethics is as follows: it should be understood as it arises from the Hearer's Ground. Because of abandoning killing and so forth, it is the ethics of cessation; because of accumulating virtue and accomplishing the meaning of sentient beings, it is the ethics of engagement; because of protecting the ethics of engagement and cessation, it is the ethics of universal protection; and the ethics that ripen the marks of a great person; the ethics that ripen higher mind; the ethics that ripen suffering migrations; and the ethics that ripen the meaning of sentient beings. Among these, what is the ethics of deprivation and desire of a Bodhisattva? That should be understood in eight aspects. Here, the Bodhisattva himself thinks in this way: Like this, for myself, may no one ever practice killing, taking what is not given, engaging in sexual misconduct, speaking false words, slander, harsh words, idle chatter, hands, fists, striking with sticks and whips, and various harmful contacts. Wishing in this way, if others were to do wrong, that would cause me deprivation, and that would make me displeasing, therefore, others, like myself, may they not be killed by others, and so forth, broadly speaking, may they not practice various harmful contacts. They also wish in this way, if I were to practice wrongly, that would cause them deprivation, and that would make them displeasing, like this, why should what is displeasing to me and others be practiced on others? Thinking in this way, act.

Having thus individually examined, even for the sake of life, I, the Bodhisattva, do not constantly engage in the eight things that displease others. This is called the eight precepts of a Bodhisattva who is poor and desirous. What are the precepts of a Bodhisattva that bring happiness in this and other lives? They should be understood as ninefold: the Bodhisattva prevents those sentient beings who should be prevented; permits those who should be permitted; gathers those sentient beings who should be gathered; and subdues those sentient beings who should be subdued. Thus, the Bodhisattva's actions of body and speech are all made pure. This is a brief explanation of the four precepts. Furthermore, there are five kinds of precepts: the precept endowed with generosity, the precept endowed with patience, the precept endowed with diligence, the precept endowed with meditation, and the precept endowed with wisdom. Combining these two, they become nine precepts. Because the Bodhisattva can bring happiness to himself and others in this life and future lives, therefore it is called bringing happiness in this and other lives. What is the pure precept of a Bodhisattva? It should be understood as tenfold: the conduct of a renunciate, because it is for the sake of desiring perfect enlightenment, and not for the sake of desiring a livelihood, therefore, from the very beginning, it is well received. Because there is no small remorse for having committed transgressions, therefore, it is not very timid. Because there is no remorse in an improper place, therefore, it is not very lax. Not indulging in the pleasure of sleep, not indulging in the pleasure of conversation, not indulging in the pleasure of lying down. Because of diligently cultivating virtuous qualities day and night, there is no laziness. As before, relying on the five branches of mindfulness, therefore, being encompassed by mindfulness. Without attachment to gain and respect. Because not vowing to abide in pure conduct with the aspiration to be born as a god, therefore, making good aspirations. In conduct and present activities, and in engaging in virtuous qualities, the actions of body and speech are extremely perfect and appropriate, therefore, being encompassed by perfect rituals.

In order to completely abandon all the faults of wrong livelihood such as flattery and hypocrisy, it is completely possessed by abundant resources, and in order to completely abandon the pursuit of desire and begging and making oneself tired, it is completely abandoned from the two extremes, and in order to completely abandon the views of all heretics, it is definitely abandoned, not diminished or destroyed, and the precepts of the Bodhisattvas that are well received are completely undiminished. These ten precepts of the Bodhisattvas are called pure. Thus, this great aggregate of the Bodhisattva's precepts produces the fruit of great enlightenment. Relying on this, the Bodhisattva perfects the perfection of discipline, and thus manifests the supreme perfect enlightenment. Until the time of manifesting perfect enlightenment, studying this immeasurable aggregate of the Bodhisattva's precepts will result in five benefits: being remembered by the Buddhas, dying while abiding in great joy, and after the body is destroyed, being reborn in the place where the Bodhisattvas who have the same or more excellent precepts, and who have the same potential and are in accordance with the Dharma, reside as virtuous friends. In this life, one will have immeasurable accumulations of merit that can perfect the perfection of discipline, and in the next life, one will also obtain the self-born discipline, that is, one will obtain the nature of that discipline. The nine aspects of the nature of discipline, etc.
