Regarding the principles of restraining and expelling, will they not be blamed by an afflicted mind? Even if blamed, will they not be corrected by punishment? Even if corrected, if not expelled, it will be with fault and contradiction. This is the fault of affliction. If, due to negligence, laziness, and carelessness, one does not blame, and even does not expel, then it is a non-afflictive fault. For those of incorrigible nature, unsuitable for conversation, unpleasant, and always full of worries, if they are abandoned, there is no fault. If one stays beyond the time, there is no fault. If one sees that from that basis there will be fighting, exposing faults, arguing, and quarreling, there is no fault. If one sees the Sangha splitting and separating, there is no fault. If those beings are without deceit, mostly possessing a sense of shame and embarrassment, quickly reaching agreement, there is no fault. Bodhisattvas possess miraculous powers and transformations, and various strengths. For those principles that should make beings afraid, they make them afraid; for those principles that should make beings happy, they make them happy. In order to prevent giving with faith, if they do not make them afraid or happy with miraculous powers, it will be with fault and contradiction, which is a non-afflictive fault. If beings mostly cling to non-Buddhists, slander the noble ones, and possess wrong views, even if not taught, there is no fault. For all those who are mentally disturbed, afflicted by painful feelings, and have not taken vows, it should be known that there is not much fault. These grounds for learning for Bodhisattvas are all actually occurring. Starting from the discipline of vows, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, the Bhagavan spoke of them scattered in various other sutras, and these are completely explained in this mother-treasury of the Bodhisattva Pitaka. Bodhisattvas arise with reverence, wanting to learn these, their thoughts are completely pure, and they aspire to Bodhi.

Having properly taken vows from others with the intention of benefiting sentient beings and the intention of accomplishing the welfare of sentient beings, one should learn with utmost respect. From the very beginning, one should cultivate respect so that faults do not arise. Even if faults arise, one should purify them according to the Dharma and be liberated from the faults. It should be understood that all these faults of a Bodhisattva are classified as misdeeds. Whether it is the Hearer Vehicle or the Great Vehicle, one should confess to those who can understand and grasp their ways of conduct. If, due to great entanglement, a Bodhisattva incurs a fault similar to a defeat, then he should retake the vows twice. If a fault arises due to medium entanglement, then he should confess the misdeed to three or more people. He should sit in front of them and first state the facts, saying: 'Venerable ones, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from such and such a basis, have incurred a misdeed that is contrary to the discipline of a Bodhisattva.' The rest should be stated in the same way as a monk confesses a misdeed. If a fault similar to a defeat arises due to small entanglement, and other faults besides that, it should be known that one should confess in front of one person. If there is no suitable person to confess to, the Bodhisattva should resolve from the bottom of his heart not to do it from now on, and should restrain himself in the future as well. Having done so, it is said that he is liberated from that fault. If a Bodhisattva properly takes vows and cannot find a person with those qualities, the Bodhisattva should take the vows of a Bodhisattva's discipline himself in front of the image of the Tathagata, like this: in front of the image, draping the upper garment over one shoulder, kneeling with the right knee on the ground, or squatting, saying: 'I, named so-and-so, pray to all the Buddhas of the ten directions and all the Bodhisattvas who abide on the great earth. In their presence, all the training bases of a Bodhisattva and...'
