All the moral disciplines of Bodhisattvas, namely, the discipline of vows, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, which all past Bodhisattvas have learned, all future Bodhisattvas will learn, and all Bodhisattvas who have appeared in the ten directions now learn, I will truly take them. One should say this, repeating it two or three times, and then rise. All the rest should be understood as before. On the path of a Bodhisattva's faults, there is no absence of other faults. The Blessed One said that a Bodhisattva's faults mostly arise from hatred, and one should know that they do not arise from desire. The intention of what was said should be viewed as follows: When a Bodhisattva develops attachment to sentient beings and is influenced by love for sentient beings, whatever actions they perform, all of those are actions that a Bodhisattva should do. It is unreasonable to make a case for doing what should not be done, as that would become a fault. A Bodhisattva's hatred towards sentient beings is not an action that benefits oneself and others, and that is not the action of a Bodhisattva. It is reasonable that doing what should not be done in that way becomes a fault. The faults of a Bodhisattva should be known as small, medium, and large, just as they arise from the accumulation of a foundation. Thus, when a Bodhisattva diligently studies their own discipline, they abide in touching happiness with the three perfections: the perfection of application, the perfection of intention, and the perfection of prior cause. What is the perfection of application? It is when a Bodhisattva does not break pure moral discipline, their actions of body, speech, and mind are completely pure, they constantly do not commit sins, and they accumulate virtuous deeds. This is called the perfection of application. What is the perfection of intention? It is to renounce with the intention of dharma, not with the intention of livelihood. It is to seek the meaning of a great Bodhisattva, not to not seek meaning.

This is about the method of practicing and pursuing Nirvana, not about not pursuing it. Pursuing it in this way, one will not be lazy, and one's diligence will not diminish. One will not be mixed with all defilements, rebirth, epidemics, the suffering of ripening results, future births, the sins of aging and death, and non-virtuous dharmas. This is called perfect intention. What is the perfect cause from the past? For example, a Bodhisattva accumulates merit and virtue in previous lives, so that in this life, he himself will not lack clothes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine for illness, and necessities, and he will also be able to share with others. This should be understood as the Bodhisattva's perfect cause from the past. A Bodhisattva strives to learn discipline, and being accompanied by these three perfections, he dwells in happiness. Conversely, being accompanied by the three deficiencies, it should be understood that he dwells in suffering. This is the extensive sutra on the precepts of all Bodhisattvas, whether belonging to the householder's side or the renunciant's side. Other difficult precepts, etc., should be understood as detailed classifications of all precepts. So, what is the Bodhisattva's difficult precept? This should be viewed in three ways: A Bodhisattva dwells in great wealth and power, and then abandons wealth, abandons the dominion over great power, and properly takes the vows of precepts. This is called the Bodhisattva's difficult precept. A Bodhisattva, having taken the precepts, becomes impoverished, and even if faced with a life-threatening situation, he will not violate the precepts he has properly taken, let alone abandon them. This is called the Bodhisattva's difficult precept, the second one. For as long as he lives, even the slightest fault will not occur, and confusion about the precepts will not occur, let alone a serious fault. It should be done in that way.

English

I keep in mind all the actions and abodes of the Bodhisattvas, and abide in mindfulness and vigilance. This is the difficult discipline of the Bodhisattva, called the third. So, from all aspects of the Bodhisattva, what is discipline? This should be viewed from four aspects: properly taken, the discipline of nature, habituation, and possessing skillful means. Among these, the discipline of properly taken is that by which the Bodhisattva's three types of discipline, the discipline of vows, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, are properly taken. The discipline of nature is that the mind-stream of one who abides in the lineage of the Bodhisattva is inherently only virtuous, so that whatever causes the actions of body and speech to be completely pure. The discipline of habituation is that the Bodhisattva has habituated himself to all three types of discipline as taught in previous lifetimes. Because of the power of that previous cause, he is displeased with all indulgence in sin, and turns away from sin, and delights in all indulgence in virtue, and desires only to indulge in virtue. The discipline of possessing skillful means is this: relying on the four objects of gathering of the Bodhisattva, whatever causes sentient beings to engage in virtuous actions of body and speech. So, what is the discipline of the noble person of the Bodhisattva? This should be understood in five aspects: the Bodhisattva himself possesses discipline, and also causes others to take discipline properly, and also speaks of the praise of discipline, and if he sees something in accordance with the Dharma, he becomes delighted, and if a fault occurs, he corrects it according to the Dharma. So, what is the discipline of all aspects of the Bodhisattva? That is six types and seven types, which together should be understood as thirteen types, because of completely taking the vast basis of training, because of completely dedicating to the great Bodhi, so it is vast, and the merit of desirable things, and making oneself weary.
