causes all the Buddha's teachings to fully mature. The discipline of benefiting sentient beings causes sentient beings to fully mature. All the activities of a Bodhisattva are exhausted in these. For example, in order to abide in happiness in this life, the mind abides, and without weariness of body and mind, the Buddha's teachings are fully matured, and sentient beings are fully matured. The discipline of a Bodhisattva is exhausted in these. The benefits of a Bodhisattva's discipline are also exhausted in these. The activities of a Bodhisattva's discipline are also exhausted in these. There is nothing higher than that. There is nothing more excellent than that. The Bodhisattvas of the past who desired great Bodhi also trained in that. Those of the future will also train in that. Those who now abide in the limitless and boundless realms of the ten directions also train in that. The tenth chapter, the chapter on discipline, from the place of Yoga of the Bodhisattva Grounds, is complete. Eleventh fascicle. The summary is as follows: It should be understood as in the previous chapter on discipline. What, then, is the essence of the Bodhisattva's patience? Relying on the power of individual examination, or naturally not minding harm done by others, not minding everything, not minding everything, a mind without confusion, and not minding solely with compassion, this, in brief, should be understood as the essence of the Bodhisattva's patience. What, then, are all the Bodhisattva's patiences? That should be viewed in two ways: relying on the side of the householder and relying on the side of the renunciant. Relying on those two sides, it should also be understood as three types: patience in not minding harm done by others, patience in accepting suffering, and patience in delighting in definitely thinking about the Dharma. How, then, does a Bodhisattva patiently not mind harm done by others? Here, when a Bodhisattva experiences intense, continuous, various, and prolonged suffering arising from harm done by others, he should train correctly in this way:

Alas! This is the retribution of my own karma! Therefore, I personally experience such painful results of the non-virtuous deeds I have done. I cannot bear the suffering, and this unbearable suffering will also become a cause of suffering in the future. I have thoroughly accepted the Dharma that has become the cause of my suffering. If I remain here, then I will surely combine myself with what is unpleasant to myself. Therefore, I will harm myself, but it is not so for others. All these formations in the minds of myself and others are also inherently of the nature of suffering. Others do not understand this. If I am already suffering, and they inflict suffering on me, then it is unreasonable for me to knowingly inflict suffering on others who are already suffering by nature. In short, even for the Hearers who are engaged in their own benefit, it is unreasonable and illogical to cause suffering to themselves and others. What need is there to mention those who are engaged in the benefit of others? Having thus separately contemplated, the Bodhisattva cultivates the five perceptions, and endures all harm to sentient beings, friends, non-friends, ordinary people, inferiors, equals, superiors, happy ones, suffering ones, those with virtues, and those with faults. What are the five perceptions? They are the perception of having been beloved in previous lives, the perception of merely following the Dharma, the perception of impermanence, the perception of suffering, and the perception of complete acceptance. How does a Bodhisattva cultivate the perception of being beloved towards sentient beings who harm him? In this regard, the Bodhisattva should train properly in this way: In other past lives long ago, which sentient being has not been my father, mother, brother, sister, teacher, preceptor, lama, or like a lama? It is difficult to find one that has not in a proper way! By thus properly attending to them, the perception of an enemy towards sentient beings who harm one will disappear, and compassion will arise.

The perception of suffering remains in me. Relying on that perception of loveliness, I disregard harm and endure it. How does a Bodhisattva cultivate the perception of merely following the Dharma in those who harm sentient beings? Here, a Bodhisattva trains correctly as follows: This is dependent on conditions, merely an action, and merely Dharma. In this, whoever is scolding, or being angry, or hitting, or revealing faults, or obstructing, and whoever should be scolded, or should be angry, or should be hit, or should have faults revealed, or should be obstructed—there is no self, no sentient being, no life, no birth. By thus properly attending to it, the perception of sentient beings ceases, and the perception of merely Dharma remains. Relying and abiding on that perception of merely Dharma, one disregards all harm from others and endures it. How does a Bodhisattva cultivate the perception of impermanence in those who harm sentient beings? Here, a Bodhisattva trains correctly as follows: Whatever sentient beings arise, all of them are of the nature of impermanence and death. The supreme harm is this: that which causes separation from life. Thus, sentient beings by nature are of the nature of death, impermanent. A wise person does not generate a disturbed mind towards them, let alone strike them with a hand, clod, or stick. What need is there to speak of completely killing them? By thus properly attending to it, one abandons the perception of permanence and essence, and the perception of impermanence and non-essence remains. Relying on that perception of impermanence, one disregards all harm and endures it. How does a Bodhisattva cultivate the perception of suffering in those who harm sentient beings? Here, a Bodhisattva says that whatever sentient beings abide in great perfection, they also have the three sufferings: the suffering of conditioning, the suffering of change, and the suffering of suffering.
