Because of greatness, the mind is suppressed, and if one always acts in that way, there is no fault. A Bodhisattva whose mind is completely occupied by arrogance is not completely pacified, and who likes not being completely pacified, laughs like a horse, always plays, always makes noisy sounds, shows laughter and distraction, and wants to make others laugh and likes to do so, due to that cause, it will become faulty and contradictory, and will become a fault of affliction. If done through forgetfulness, it will become a non-afflictive fault. If the desire arises to abandon it, there is no fault, as before. If one wants to abandon the suffering that others have generated by that method, there is no fault. If one wants to eliminate the sorrow that others have generated, there is no fault. To gather those who like others with that nature, or to protect the crest jewel, or to act in accordance with them, there is no fault. If one fears that others will become displeased with the Bodhisattva, and suffer and turn away, and does so in order to show the purity of inner thought with a joyful expression, there is no fault. Any Bodhisattva should not abide with a fondness for Nirvana, but should turn away from Nirvana and abide. One should not be afraid of afflictions and near afflictions. One should not make the mind completely separate from them, because the Bodhisattva must wander in countless eons, and must perfectly accomplish enlightenment, and if one thinks and says that way, it will become faulty and contradictory, and will become a fault of affliction. Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva should always cultivate fondness for Nirvana as the Hearers do, and should make the mind weary of afflictions and near afflictions, and a hundred million times more than that, one should always cultivate fondness for Nirvana, and must cultivate weariness of afflictions and near afflictions. Because the Hearer strives only for the benefit of himself alone.

A Bodhisattva is diligent for the benefit of all sentient beings. Therefore, he must truly cultivate the habit of keeping his mind completely free from afflictions. Even if he is not an Arhat, he is superior to an Arhat because he possesses a mind completely free from afflictions and enjoys things that are exhausted of outflows. If a Bodhisattva does not guard and propagate truthful words that may cause his words to be distrusted, unwelcome, or become evil speech, then he will be at fault and in violation, and it will become a fault of affliction. If he does not guard and eliminate untrue words, then he will not be at fault and not in violation, and it will not become a fault of affliction. If the other person is a heretic or any other attached person, there is no fault. If one speaks unfavorably of renunciants, beggars, or those who practice virtue, there is no fault. If one speaks because one is overwhelmed by anger and the mind is perverted, there is no fault. If a Bodhisattva sees any harmful or forceful method that will benefit sentient beings, but does not use that method to protect his own displeasure, then he will be at fault and in violation, and it will become a non-afflictive fault. If it is only for a small benefit in this life, or if the matter will cause great displeasure, there is no fault. If a Bodhisattva retaliates with abuse against those who abuse him, retaliates with anger against those who are angry, retaliates with scolding against those who scold, and retaliates with exposing shortcomings against those who expose shortcomings, then he will be at fault and in violation, and it will become a fault of affliction. If a Bodhisattva has done wrong to others, or suspects that others have done wrong, but because he harbors a generally resentful mind and is overwhelmed by arrogance, he does not harmoniously purify with punishment and neglects it, then he will be at fault and in violation, and it will become a fault of affliction. If one does not harmoniously purify with punishment because of laziness, indolence, or carelessness, then one will be at fault and in violation, and it is an affliction.
