Or, one may also listen to this condensed mother of the Bodhisattva Pitaka. Thus, the Blessed One has spoken of thousands of grounds for the training of Bodhisattvas in those Sutras, and in order to practice them, one should train accordingly. Even if one is wise, one should not despise the precepts of morality that a Bodhisattva has properly taken from all Bodhisattvas. One should not despise those who initially do not believe in, accept, or contemplate the proper taking of the precepts of morality. One should not despise the greedy, the overcome by desire, the greatly desirous, and the uncontent. One should not despise those who have broken their vows, those who do not respect the trainings, and the lax. One should not despise the angry, the resentful, those who are greatly impatient, and those who cannot tolerate the faults of others. One should not despise the indolent, the lazy, those who mostly indulge in the pleasure of sleep day and night, the pleasure of idle talk, the pleasure of lying down, and those who waste time with noisy talk. One should not despise those whose minds are distracted, and who cannot even for a moment meditate single-pointedly on virtue. One should not despise the dull-witted, the ignorant, the overly discouraged, and those who slander the Bodhisattva Sutra Pitaka and the mother of the Bodhisattva Pitaka. Even if a Bodhisattva has grasped and fully understood the ritual of properly taking the vows, one should not rashly proclaim and make known to those beings who hate the Bodhisattva Sutra Pitaka and do not have faith. Why is that? Because if they hear it, they will be obscured by the great obscuration of disbelief and misunderstanding, and thus will engage in slander. For those who slander, as much as the Bodhisattva abiding in the vows possesses immeasurable accumulations of merit, so much will their sinful words, sinful views, and sinful thoughts not be abandoned in all times and places, until forever.

Even in between, one will only possess an immeasurable accumulation of non-merit. If one wishes to properly take the vows of a Bodhisattva, one should first proclaim from this mother of the Bodhisattva's Sutra Pitaka the foundations of the Bodhisattva's training and the places of offense that have been taught. If one examines from the heart and distinguishes with wisdom, not for the sake of showing off, nor for the sake of making others truly accept, nor for the sake of competing with others, then one should know that one is a steadfast Bodhisattva. This proper taking of the vows of discipline should not be allowed to be taken by him, and it should also be bestowed upon him. Thus, a Bodhisattva who abides in the vows of discipline has four things that are like defeat, namely: being excessively attached to gain and respect, praising oneself and disparaging others, which are like defeat for a Bodhisattva. And there are enjoyments, but while possessing them, one suffers from the nature of attachment, being miserly, and not giving material things to beggars who are helpless and without support, and who have come well; and because of being stingy with the Dharma, not sharing the Dharma with those who seek the Dharma and have come well, which is like a defeat for a Bodhisattva. Whoever does not abandon a Bodhisattva even if he is only spoken to with harsh words, but instead increases such entanglement of anger, and being overcome by anger, strikes sentient beings with his hands, feet, or sticks, harms them, and disturbs them, even if others try to dissuade him with contradictory reasons, he only holds onto the intention of anger, not listening, not tolerating, and not abandoning the thought, this is also like a defeat for a Bodhisattva. Slandering the Bodhisattva's Pitaka, or oneself or others, believing in false and fabricated Dharma, delighting in false and fabricated Dharma, teaching and establishing it, is like a defeat for a Bodhisattva. These four are like defeat.

These are the grounds for defeat. If a Bodhisattva commits even one of these, they will lose the opportunity to acquire vast accumulations of enlightenment in this life, and the ability to fully uphold (the Bodhisattva vows). What need is there to mention if they commit all of them? Even in this very life, they will lose the opportunity to purify their intentions. They are merely pretending to be a Bodhisattva, not a true Bodhisattva. If one is bound by these four defeat-like places with slight or moderate entanglement, the Bodhisattva will not abandon the vows they have taken. However, they will be abandoned by great entanglement. If a Bodhisattva constantly engages in these four defeat-like dharmas, and does not generate even a small amount of shame or embarrassment, is content with them, rejoices in them, and regards them as virtues, then it should be known that this is a great entanglement. For example, just as a monk who has committed a defeat abandons the vows of individual liberation, a Bodhisattva will not abandon the vows of a Bodhisattva that they have taken by engaging in a defeat-like dharma even once. Even if a Bodhisattva has completely abandoned the vows they have taken, they still have the opportunity to regain the vows of a Bodhisattva in this life. For example, a monk who abides in the vows of individual liberation does not necessarily lose the opportunity even if they commit a defeat. In short, only two causes will cause a Bodhisattva to abandon the vows they have taken: abandoning the aspiration for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and constantly engaging in great entanglement with defeat-like dharmas. If a Bodhisattva has neither abandoned their aspiration nor constantly engaged in great entanglement with defeat-like dharmas, then no matter where they are born, whether below, above, or in all directions, the Bodhisattva will not abandon the vows of a Bodhisattva that they have taken.
