They seek bedding, cushions, medicine for the sick, and utensils. They also share their own clothes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine for the sick, and utensils that are in accordance with the Dharma and obtained lawfully, without hiding them away for personal use. They bestow the eight kinds of instructions that are appropriate for the time, and they also subsequently reveal the five kinds of teachings. The instructions and subsequent teachings are as explained in the chapter on the qualities of power, and they should be understood in the same way here. Furthermore, when a Bodhisattva uses the discipline that accords with the mind to make the minds of sentient beings accord, they first know the thoughts, nature, and faculties of sentient beings. Having known the thoughts, nature, and faculties, they now abide with those sentient beings with whom they should abide. They subdue those sentient beings who should be subdued in the way that they should be subdued. If a Bodhisattva wishes to make the mind of a certain sentient being accord, and if they see that such actions of body and speech would cause that being suffering and displeasure, and that suffering and displeasure would not lead them from the state of non-virtue to the state of virtue, then the Bodhisattva should carefully examine and completely abandon those actions of body and speech, and not engage in them. If they see that the suffering and displeasure would lead them from the state of non-virtue to the state of virtue, then the Bodhisattva should act in this way: holding only compassion for others, they should examine carefully and not make the minds of others accord. Regarding other beings, if actions of body and speech would cause suffering and displeasure to arise in those beings, and if those beings and others besides them cannot be led from the state of non-virtue to the state of virtue, even so, the Bodhisattva should examine carefully and, in order not to make the minds of those other beings accord, abandon those actions of body and speech.

If a Bodhisattva sees that other beings, or those different from them, or both, can be rescued from a state of non-virtue and placed in a state of virtue, then the Bodhisattva should only keep close to the mind of loving-kindness. Having examined them individually, they should act with body and speech, and not conform to the minds of those beings. A Bodhisattva, with his own body and speech, whatever actions he takes, if he truly sees that they cause suffering and displeasure to others, then that action of body and speech is neither part of what should be learned, nor is it endowed with the accumulation of merit and wisdom. Suffering and displeasure also cause others to turn away from the state of non-virtue, and so forth, which should be understood as before. In order to protect the minds of others, the Bodhisattva should abandon those actions of body and speech. Actions that are the opposite of this should also be understood as before. Just as suffering and displeasure are, so too are happiness and pleasure the same, and they should be understood in detail as appropriate. A Bodhisattva who conforms to the minds of others, if others are bound by afflictions, until they are freed from afflictions, and before the affliction of anger arises, even obvious praise should not be spoken, let alone non-praise, let alone using a whip to subdue them? Furthermore, a Bodhisattva who conforms to the minds of others, if others do not speak, he also causes them to speak and truly rejoice, let alone speaking and truly rejoicing? A Bodhisattva who conforms to the minds of others does not cause others to quarrel, but only because of compassion for them, he only wants to rebuke them, and rebukes them with subdued senses. A Bodhisattva who conforms to the minds of others also does not ridicule others, nor does he despise others, nor does he cause them to shrink back. In order not to dwell on the touch of pleasure, he also does not arouse doubt. Even to those who have been punished and rebuked, he does not speak of the matter of punishment. Even to those who have little joy, he does not show himself to be superior. Bodhisattva
