In summary, it is for the sake of sentient beings attaining happiness in this life and the next. Among these, material and fearlessness giving, along with various distinctions, are for the happiness of this life. And the Dharma giving with various distinctions is for the happiness of the next life. So, what is the pure giving of a Bodhisattva? That can be understood in ten aspects: without hindrance, without attachment, without accumulation, without pride, not dependent, not timid, not evil, not turning away, not seeking reward, not seeking fruition. What is giving without hindrance? It is when a Bodhisattva, to those who come to beg, does not become weary and quickly gives. The Bodhisattva begins giving in this way, just as acting swiftly, the beggar begins from obtaining, and does not act so swiftly. What is giving without attachment? It is when a Bodhisattva does not think in this way: this giving has no result, or harmful giving will become virtue, or merely the perfection of giving will become worldly and transworldly purity, and does not cling to such views. What is giving without accumulation? It is when a Bodhisattva does not accumulate and gather things to be given for a long time, and then give them all at once. Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva does not turn away those who come to beg when there are things to be given, and if even the reason for turning away is not seen, how would one consider other things? The Bodhisattva does not see that the gate of accumulating merit will be more excellent from accumulated giving, because the things to be given are the same, and the beggars who come earlier or later or at the same time are the same, so for gradual giving and giving all at once, why would one think that there is a difference in merit? Because these things are seen. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva's accumulated giving is connected with faults, but one should give as one obtains possessions.

That is seen as blameless. Why is that? Because giving alms that are accumulated in this way, if beggars beg, the previous hundred requests will be turned back, and those people will generate universal torment, intolerance, and distrust. Even without begging, they will give accumulated alms to some. Therefore, Bodhisattvas do not give alms after accumulating them. What is giving without arrogance? Bodhisattvas do not give alms to beggars with a condescending attitude. They also do not give alms to compete with others. Even after giving alms, they do not become arrogant, thinking that they are generous givers and others are not. What is giving without dependence? Bodhisattvas do not give alms relying on fame, sound, or verses, because fame is considered to arise from discriminating words, is only related to sound, and is like a dry leaf. What is giving without discouragement? In this case, Bodhisattvas are joyful before giving, have good intentions at the time of giving, and have no regrets after giving. Even if they hear of the vast and extremely extensive almsgiving of Bodhisattvas, they do not belittle themselves and become discouraged. What is giving that is not bad? Bodhisattvas carefully select the items to be given, and give the best and most excellent items such as food, drink, vehicles, and clothing. What is giving without partiality? Bodhisattvas treat friends, enemies, and ordinary people with an equal mind, without discrimination, and give alms with equal compassion. What is giving without expecting a return? Bodhisattvas give alms with a compassionate and loving heart, without expecting any return from the other party. To those who desire happiness, those who are burned by the fire of greed, those who are powerless, and those who are by nature

Because of seeing those who suffer. What is giving that does not look to fruition? When a Bodhisattva gives, they do not expect the fruition of giving, such as having perfect enjoyment or a perfect body in the future. They see all conditioned things as without essence, because they see supreme enlightenment as beneficial. With these ten aspects, the giving of Bodhisattvas becomes pure and exceedingly pure. Thus, Bodhisattvas, relying on these nine kinds of giving, having perfected the perfection of giving, will awaken to manifest, unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The ninth chapter, on giving, from the Bodhisattva-bhumi-yogacarabhumi. Eighth fascicle. Summary: Essence and all, difficulty and all doors, endowed with noble persons, likewise all aspects, destitute and endowed with desire, happiness in this and other lives, completely pure and nine aspects, in short, it is discipline. That is it. What is the discipline of Bodhisattvas? It should be understood as nine aspects: the essence of discipline, all disciplines, difficult discipline, discipline from all doors, the discipline of noble persons, the discipline of all aspects, discipline for the destitute and desirous, discipline that turns to happiness in this and other lives, and completely pure discipline. What is the essence of discipline? In brief, it should be understood that possessing four qualities is the essence of the discipline of Bodhisattvas. What are the four? Taking it well and correctly from others, having a very pure intention, restoring it if it is broken, and generating respect and abiding in mindfulness in order not to break it. By taking discipline correctly from others, when a Bodhisattva violates the training, relying on others, shame will arise. With a very pure intention, the Bodhisattva
