Do not proclaim or mix any deceptive words, regarding leftovers that should be discarded, such as leftover rice and bran. Similarly, for those who do not eat garlic and onions, do not give food contaminated with garlic and onions. Similarly, for those who do not eat meat and do not drink alcohol, do not give food mixed with alcohol or contaminated with alcohol. Similarly, do not allow them to do improper things, and do not give to other Bodhisattvas, do not give alms that are unsuitable like this. A Bodhisattva should not repeatedly ask beggars, make them run back and forth, or annoy them with flattery, nor should they give alms. Alms should be given as soon as they beg. A Bodhisattva should not rely on fame, sound, and verses to give alms. One should not rely on the return of others, one should not rely on Indra, Mara, Chakravartin, and Ishvara to give alms. One should not give alms because the other party is a king, minister, town dweller, local resident, Brahmin, householder, rich person, merchant, and leader, knowing that they are generous and are benefactors, in order to receive their respect, reverence, portrait, and offerings, in order to pretend to others. One should not give alms in a stingy way, if even a small amount is mostly given, what need is there to mention a large amount? One should not think of enticing them with this alms, making them believe, and then deceiving them afterwards, giving alms in order to find the weaknesses of others. For example, one should not create divisions in a village, a part of a village, a region, or a part of a region through alms, in order to separate from others, thinking that one can seize from the owners and receive respect, one should not give alms to divide others. A Bodhisattva is someone who is intelligent, not lazy, able to practice, and prepares himself, before completely giving away the things to be given, one should go ahead.

One also gives alms oneself, and also persuades others to give alms, relying on oneself without laziness. One does not instruct others to give alms or employ them. Knowing that a large gathering of beggars has assembled, and that those who uphold morality and those who violate morality have all gathered and are dwelling there, one goes back and forth in order from the eldest to the youngest, giving all things that should be given as alms. Even though a Bodhisattva has many vast and abundant possessions, he does not give little alms. He does not give alms to some for the sake of favoring them over others. He does not give alms because of scolding, anger, beating, threatening, slandering, killing, binding, punishing with penalties, putting in prison, or banishing. A Bodhisattva is happy in mind even before giving alms, and is also happy in mind when giving alms, and has no regrets after giving. He also does not give deceptive alms to those sentient beings who desire them, such as those made to resemble gems, pearls, vaidurya, conch shells, tridacna, coral, and so forth. A Bodhisattva, with respect to things to be given as alms, whether they are few or many, does not fail to give them in his mind to all sentient beings beforehand. Later, when a beggar regards his own wealth as precious, it is as if he is taking it back from the Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva gives alms at the proper time, and not at an improper time. He gives what is suitable for himself and others, and not what is unsuitable. He attends to things properly, and not improperly. He gives alms with an undistracted mind, and not with a distracted mind. A Bodhisattva does not mock beggars, nor does he despise them, nor does he make them feel ashamed. He also does not make a frowning face. His face is bright, and he speaks frankly after being gentle. He does not delay giving alms, but gives them quickly. A Bodhisattva does not wait to be asked, but creates opportunities himself, and gives whatever others want to them.

do. They also rejoice in those they have taken themselves. Bodhisattvas also do not give with wicked wisdom. When giving, they only give with wise giving. What is the wise giving of a Bodhisattva? Here, a Bodhisattva has things to give. If they have them, even before a beggar comes, they think in advance, 'Whether I have things to give or not, if the giver is a householder with material possessions, and if there come to me two kinds of beggars, one who is happy and not poor, with protectors and support, and one who is miserable, destitute, poor, without protectors and support, then if I have the means to satisfy both and fulfill their desires, then I will satisfy both and fulfill their desires. If I do not have the means to satisfy both or fulfill their desires, then I will give up the happy one and give to the miserable one. I will give up the one who is not destitute and poor, with protectors and support, and give to the one who is destitute, poor, without protectors and support.' Thus, having made up their mind, they will act according to how they have made up their mind. Even if they cannot fulfill the desires of the happy beggar, they will rely on their previous intention and say to the beggar, 'I have already given away the things to be given to the miserable one, because I have already made a vow. I have given to him, it is not that I do not want to give to you. Therefore, please do not be angry with me for turning you away.' Thus, they will explain with gentle words and then give. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva has things to give. If they have them, they always hold on to and are stingy with the possessions of a miserly household and an extremely miserly household, and they rarely do good deeds.
