One does not give to sentient beings in all ways, without distinction, all things internal and external. So, which of the two kinds of things, internal and external, does the Bodhisattva give to sentient beings? What does he not give? How does he give? How does he not give? Of those internal and external things, the giving that only brings happiness to sentient beings, but is not beneficial, or that does not bring happiness and is not beneficial, that the Bodhisattva does not give to others. The giving that is not beneficial, but brings happiness, is uncertain, or that brings both happiness and benefit, that the Bodhisattva gives to others. Thus, this is a brief explanation of giving and not giving. From here on, it should be known that it is a detailed distinction. Here, the Bodhisattva does not give himself to do harm to others, to deceive others, or to be compelled by unreasonable things, to make others subject to him, or to depend on others. The Bodhisattva may even promise to completely give his life to others a hundred times, a thousand times, or a hundred thousand times, but he will not harm others, kill others, or deceive others in order to obey others' commands or to please others. If the Bodhisattva starts from giving, even if his intention is pure, but if there are many things to do that benefit sentient beings, even if someone comes to beg for his body, limbs, and organs, he will not give his body, limbs, and organs. Why? Because the Bodhisattva starts from giving, and his intention is pure, he will not hesitate in any way, thinking, "This should be given, this should not be given." Therefore, the Bodhisattva is for the sake of purifying his intention at all times. If he does not give, being indifferent to the needs of sentient beings, it is because his intention is pure, so he does not give, being indifferent to the needs of sentient beings.

Do not. In order to prevent the gods of the demonic class from being harmed by those who come to beg with the thought of how to offend them, and to prevent them from turning into great disasters, one does not cut off and give away one's own body and limbs. For the gods of the demonic class, just as one treats them, one should understand that sentient beings who are blessed by them are treated in the same way. Bodhisattvas do not cut off and give away their own bodies and limbs to those who are insane or mentally disturbed. Because they neither dwell in their own minds, nor do they beg for desire, because their minds have no autonomy, they are merely babbling, therefore they do not give. Apart from these situations, for desires that are contrary to this, Bodhisattvas give away their limbs and hands and feet completely, merely because their own body is controlled by others. The internal things of a Bodhisattva that can be given and cannot be given should be understood in this way. In terms of external things, Bodhisattvas do not give to beggars any poison, fire, weapons, and alcohol that will harm sentient beings, if they want to beg for the sake of harming. For any poison, fire, weapons, and alcohol that will benefit sentient beings, Bodhisattvas want to beg for the sake of benefiting themselves or benefiting others, and they give to beggars. Bodhisattvas also do not give things that others do not trust to others. Bodhisattvas also do not act as matchmakers, luring other people's wives, and then giving them to others. Nor do they give food and drink with living beings. Bodhisattvas do not give to beggars any objects that are pleasing, playful, and harmful to sentient beings. Why? Because even if they give, they will only generate a little joy in the Bodhisattva, but this giving will cause them great harm.

Because, due to those things, one becomes greedy, negligent, and engages in evil deeds, leading to the destruction of the body and rebirth in the lower realms. If joy and games, etc., do not lead to falling into the lower realms and do not become the root of non-virtue, then, in order to make the mind happy, such joy and games, etc., should be given to those who ask, because these things also serve to accumulate and perfect. What kind of joy and games does a Bodhisattva not give to those who ask, and what kind does he give? For example, a Bodhisattva does not give teachings on how to kill animals. He does not perform evil sacrifices, such as large-scale sacrifices where many lives are gathered and killed, nor does he allow others to perform such sacrifices. He also does not give the slaughter of livestock to deities. If one asks for a place where many beings live, such as a place where aquatic or terrestrial animals live, in order to harm those beings, he does not give it. If one asks for nets and hunting tools, or teachings on how to make nets and hunting tools, in order to harm beings, he does not give them. He also does not give enemies to enemies in order to intimidate, kill, imprison, execute, or inflict harm. In short, a Bodhisattva does not give any joy or games that may harm or cause suffering to other beings to those who ask. Elephants, horses, vehicles, riding instruments, and mounts, clothes and ornaments, food and drink, and beverages, the teaching of dance, song, and musical sounds, and the instruments of dance, song, and musical sounds, incense, garlands, various perfumes, various utensils, gardens, and houses.
