the guide, and to counteract the extreme of annihilationism that is not well grasped, to guide the Middle Way, and to cause the abandonment of the arrogance of thinking that what has not been done has been done, and to cause the abandonment of the arrogance of thinking that what has not been attained, not realized, and not manifested has been manifested. These eight instructions, if briefly summarized, should be understood as being summarized by three places. What are these three places? In order to make the mind abide where it does not abide, first, skillfully establish it on the object of focus; in order to obtain one's own purpose when the mind abides, truly explain the path of means; for those whose own purpose has not been completed, cause them to abandon the intermediate state. Among these, by entering the mind and the senses, and the thought and the habitual tendencies, and the knowledge as appropriate, it should be understood that the mind is well established on the object of focus in order to make the mind abide. Among these, by the Middle Way that counteracts the extremes of permanence and annihilation that are not well grasped, it should be understood that the path of means is truly explained in order to obtain one's own purpose when the mind abides. Among these, from what has not been done until what has not been manifested, causing the abandonment of the arrogance of thinking that it has been manifested, it should be understood that the intermediate state between what is needed for one's own purpose and what has not been completed is completely abandoned. In this way, it should be understood that these three places summarize the eight instructions. In this way, the bodhisattva, hearing instructions from others or giving them to others, gradually purifies and increases the eight powers, namely, the power of knowing meditation and liberation, and samadhi and equipoise, and the power of knowing the superior and inferior faculties, and the power of knowing various inclinations, and the power of knowing various realms, and the power of knowing the path of all migrations, and the power of knowing the recollection of past lives, and the power of knowing death and birth, and the power of knowing the exhaustion of defilements. Among these, what is the subsequent instruction? That should be understood as five types, namely, preventing all actions that have faults, and practicing actions that have no faults.

Allowing and prohibiting, and for the Dharma classes that are allowed, urging to universally practice errors, repeatedly becoming disrespectful, for errors there is no dispute, no discord, with a slick mind admonishing and putting into memory, for those who correctly enter, prohibiting, and from the allowed Dharma classes, proclaiming true qualities and joy, thereby truly making them rejoice. The bodhisattva's subsequent teachings, in short, should be understood as five types, namely: prohibition, allowance, urging, admonishment, and truly making them rejoice. Then, what is it that bodhisattvas are possessed of by the skillful means of body, speech, and mind? In short, the four objects of gathering of bodhisattvas are called skillful means, as the Blessed One also said, a bodhisattva who possesses the skillful means of being gathered by the four objects of gathering is called a bodhisattva. Why are the four objects of gathering called skillful means? In short, the means of taming and gathering beings are four types, there is nothing higher than this, and there is nothing more excellent than this, namely: benefiting, causing to hold, causing to enter, and accomplishing harmony. Among them, giving is the bodhisattva's means of benefiting, thus after benefiting with various material gifts, beings will consider listening and acting. Afterwards, the bodhisattva, with pleasing speech, in order to dispel all the ignorance of those who are universally ignorant of this and that, causes them to hold to reason and truly reveals it, thus, his pleasing speech is the means of causing them to hold. Thus, beings who are caused to hold to reason and are truly shown, are rescued from the state of non-virtue, caused to hold to the state of purity, and are tamed, established, and placed, this is his meaningful conduct, that is, the means of causing them to enter. Thus, after the bodhisattva places those beings, he universally practices conduct that is in accordance with them, thereby accomplishing harmony, because of what? Because for him, you are still not possessed of faith, possessed of discipline
