Gradually purify and increase it. What is not done and what is done by others will not mature for anyone, but the deeds that have been done and done by oneself will produce fruit and will not be exhausted even in hundreds of kalpas. Likewise, what has not been done will not be encountered, and what has been done will not be exhausted. The teachings of the Buddha, when the Bodhisattva truly understands them, gradually purify and increase them with the power of knowing that karma is one's own. So how does a Bodhisattva seek to hear? Here, the Bodhisattva abides with great reverence and seeks the Dharma that is well spoken and well argued. In short, in this way also, he abides with reverence for what is well spoken. The Bodhisattva, even for the sake of hearing one well-spoken word, if he does not do so, he will not hear the well-spoken word. It is like being extremely happy even with a ground heated and burning with iron, and going with the utmost reverence. What need is there to mention many well-spoken words? What need is there to mention the Bodhisattva's bodily implements, food, drink, and other things? The joy and reverence for one's own body, compared to the joy and reverence for hearing well-spoken words, the former compared to the latter, cannot even compare to one percent. One thousandth, counting, part, calculation, and cause cannot compare. Therefore, being respectful of well-spoken words, when hearing well-spoken words, one will not be tired or satisfied, but will have faith, great faith, a gentle and upright mind, and upright views. He goes to the speaker of the Dharma desiring qualities, not with a mind to find fault. He goes with reverence, not with the pride of arrogance. It is not for the sake of proclaiming one's own merits that one seeks what kind of virtue. Rather, it is so that oneself and others can be properly joined to the root of virtue, not for gain and respect. He goes and is endowed in this way.

Listen to the Dharma without any afflictions and without distraction. How does one listen without any afflictions? By being free from the afflictions of pride, free from the afflictions of contempt, and free from the afflictions of timidity. Among these, one becomes free from the afflictions of pride through six aspects. One becomes free from the afflictions of contempt through four aspects. One becomes free from the afflictions of timidity through one aspect. That is, listening at the right time, showing respect, serving, not being angry, being compliant, and not finding fault. Through these six aspects, one becomes free from the afflictions of pride. By placing reverence in the Dharma, placing reverence in the person who speaks the Dharma, not despising the Dharma, and not despising the person who speaks the Dharma. Through these four aspects, one listens free from the afflictions of contempt. One listens without despising oneself. Through this single aspect, one listens free from the afflictions of timidity. Thus, a Bodhisattva listens to the Dharma free from all afflictions. Then, how does a Bodhisattva listen to the Dharma without distraction? There are five aspects: having a mind that seeks to know everything, having a single-pointed mind, listening attentively, paying attention, and listening to the Dharma after thinking with all one's mind. This is how a Bodhisattva seeks to hear. Then, why does a Bodhisattva seek to hear? A Bodhisattva seeks the Buddha's teachings completely in order to truly practice with diligence in the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma, and in order to extensively and truly show it to others. A Bodhisattva seeks the reasoning of logic, in order to fully understand the incorrect explanations and incorrect statements in that very treatise as they are, in order to subdue opponents, in order to make those who do not believe in this doctrine believe, and in order to increase the faith of those who already believe.

It is for the sake of practice. Bodhisattvas seek the science of sound, examining words and letters, and excellent syntax, in order to inspire faith in those who are fond of speech, and in order to enable them to use various definite words to express the same meaning. Bodhisattvas seek the science of medicine, in order to pacify the various diseases of sentient beings, and in order to benefit the vast populace. Bodhisattvas seek knowledge of worldly crafts and skills. For the benefit of sentient beings, to obtain enjoyment with few resources, to create things cherished by sentient beings, and because of helping them by giving the benefit of knowledge of crafts and skills. Bodhisattvas seek all these five sciences, in order to perfect the great accumulation of the wisdom of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, because if one does not learn everything in this way, one will not gradually obtain unobstructed omniscient wisdom. What a Bodhisattva seeks, how he seeks, and for what he seeks, that has been said. Then, what should a Bodhisattva show to others, how should he show it, and for what should he show it? To that, he shows what he has sought. For the sake of what he has sought, he shows it to others. He shows it in two ways: through speaking concordant words and through complete purity. Then, how does one speak concordant words? He should show it to those whose conduct conforms to the rules, but not to those who do not conform. One should not sit on a seat that is too high, one should not cover one's head, one should not walk in front, one should understand as it is explained in detail in the sutras. Why is that? Because the Dharma is the teacher of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and if one respects the Dharma, others will also respect the Dharma more, and when listening to the Dharma, they will be respectful and will not despise it. One should not be stingy with the Dharma, and for the Dharma, the teacher should
