For example, that which arises in dependence on the hand and from the cause of the hand is the action of taking. That which arises in dependence on the foot and from the cause of the foot is the action of going and coming. That which arises in dependence on the joints and from the cause of the joints is the action of bending and stretching. That which arises in dependence on hunger and thirst and from the cause of hunger and thirst is taking and seeking food and drink. It should be understood that having immeasurable objects similar to that is the dependent cause. Therein, the seed is the projecting cause until its final fruit. Except for the seed, other conditions are the cause of complete holding. The seed itself is the cause of the manifest accomplishment of its fruit. The fruit accomplished from the seed is the guiding cause of the subsequent fruit projected by the seed. The cause itself of various kinds and different forms is the cause of individual determination. Whatever is the dependent cause, whatever is the projecting cause, whatever is the cause of complete holding, whatever is the cause of manifest accomplishment, whatever is the guiding cause, and whatever is the cause of individual determination, all those causes gathered together are called the co-operative cause. The cause that obstructs arising is the discordant cause. That which does not obstruct is the non-discordant cause. Therein, if the discordant cause is briefly summarized, there are six aspects: discordant words, such as the inconsistent earlier and later treatises of some ascetics and Brahmins. Contradictory to reason is the reason that is not suitable for establishing the meaning that should be established and known. Discordant with arising, for example, if there is no cause for arising and there is a dharma that obstructs arising, such as not arising. Discordant with co-existence, for example, light and darkness, desire and hatred, pleasure and pain. Incompatible discordance, for example, snakes and mongooses, cats and mice, two that are mutually hostile and have become enemies. Discordant

The differences between the favorable and unfavorable sides are as follows: contemplating ugliness and desire, contemplating loving-kindness and malice, contemplating compassion and harm, contemplating the limbs of enlightenment and the eightfold path, and all the afflictions that operate in the three realms. In terms of meaning, here it is considered to be opposed to birth. Furthermore, all these causes can be summarized into two causes: the cause of generation and the cause of means. Among them, the seed that draws and manifests is the cause of generation. The remaining causes should be understood as the cause of means. Sixth fascicle. There are four conditions: the causal condition, the immediately preceding condition, the objective condition, and the dominant condition. Among them, the cause of generation is the causal condition. The cause of means should be understood as the dominant condition. The immediately preceding condition and the objective condition belong to the mind and mental factors. Thus, the previously arisen mind and mental factors, through the interval, are completely grasped, and through the object, are completely grasped, thereby arising and entering. Therefore, it should be understood that the immediately preceding condition and the objective condition are included in the cause of complete grasping. So, how do all worldly things arise through these ten causes? How do afflictions arise? How does purification arise? For example, in the world, those crops that belong to the category of fruits, by which this world is sustained, their names, concepts, and various forms of words, such as: barley, rice, wheat, sesame, small beans, soybeans, and Chinese beans, etc., these are taken from their names. Take it, pick it up, put it down, etc., are the reasons for subsequently establishing names. Just as with barley, the rest should also be understood in the same way. Hunger and

Hunger and weakness, and depending on the sustenance of the body, and depending on experiencing the taste of food. The desire, seeking, obtaining, and enjoying of these, that is their dependent cause. From whatever seed whatever crop arises, that seed is its projective cause. The sprout arising from conditions such as earth and rain, that is the completely grasping cause. The seed is the manifest accomplishing cause of that sprout. The continuous transmission of sprout, trunk, and leaves from one to another, that is the guiding cause for the accomplishment of that crop and the complete ripening of that crop. From a barley seed, only a barley sprout and a barley crop will arise, not something else. Likewise, the remainder should also be understood; this is their individually determined cause. Starting from the dependent cause and ending with the individually determined cause, all those causes are the cooperative cause for the accomplishment of the crop. If the grain lacks any cause, it will not be accomplished; therefore, the assembly of all of these is called the cooperative cause. Hail and damage to the crop, and so forth, which obstruct, are the unfavorable causes. The absence of those, the absence of obstruction, is the absence of unfavorable causes. Thus, these ten causes, just as they are for gathered grains, should also be understood to be applied accordingly to other worldly objects. In this regard, like this, the names, concepts, and expressions of all dependent origination are as follows: ignorance and formations, and consciousness, from name and form to the extensive aging and death, and sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation, these are temporarily terms of affliction, with ignorance as the condition for formations, and so forth, from birth as the condition for aging and death, and so forth, are the causes for establishing terms. Depending on experiencing objects, these limbs of existence enter, those are its afflictions.
