Nor can one be liberated from it. When maturity is in the middle state, it is moderate aspiration and moderate effort. One will not go to the lower realms, and in that very life, one will attain the fruit of a renunciate, but in that very life, one will not be completely liberated from suffering. One who abides in great maturity has great aspiration and great effort. One will not go to the lower realms, and in this very life, one will attain the fruit of a renunciate, and in that very life, one will also be completely liberated from suffering. A solitary buddha should be understood in the same way as a hearer. Why is that? Because they are the same as the hearers in the nature of the path. The distinction between hearers and solitary buddhas is this: in the last existence, one obtains the last body, and without a teacher, through the power of prior habituation, one meditates on the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and thus directly realizes the state of an arhat who has abandoned all defilements. Therefore, one is called a solitary buddha. A bodhisattva who abides in the stage of conduct based on faith should be understood as having small complete maturity. Pure superior intention is medium maturity. That which is definite and ultimate is great maturity. Among them, a bodhisattva who abides in small maturity has small aspiration and small effort. One will also go to the lower realms and should be known as belonging to the first countless eon. It is only that one does not possess all of the virtuous qualities of the path to enlightenment, immovability, and complete purity. A bodhisattva of medium maturity has medium aspiration and medium effort. One will also not go to the lower realms. Belongs to the second countless eon, does not possess the virtuous qualities of the path to enlightenment and immovability, and does not possess complete purity. A bodhisattva who abides in great complete maturity has great aspiration and great effort. One will also not go to the lower realms. Belongs to the third countless eon, cultivates the virtuous qualities of the path to enlightenment and

is unwavering and possesses exceedingly pure qualities. It is called "exertion" because it is inherently firm, clear, its fruit is exceedingly great, and its benefit is exceedingly great. It is called "unwavering" because it is irreversible, undiminishing, and particularly excellent. It is called "exceedingly pure" because it is unsurpassed within the bodhisattva grounds. Among these, whatever maturation arises from material possessions, whatever arises from intentional actions through magical powers, whatever arises from secretly proclaiming the Dharma, whatever arises from small efforts, and whatever maturation arises merely from hearing—these five types of maturation, even if one cultivates these virtuous dharmas for a long time, are only small; what need is there to mention cultivating them for a short time? Everything other than the cause of maturation should be understood as the nature of three types of maturation: by becoming accustomed to smallness, it becomes small; by becoming accustomed to the middle, it is middling; by becoming accustomed to greatness, it should be understood as maturation being great. Each of those small, middling, and great maturations should also be understood as being of three types: within the small, there is the small of the small, the middling of the small, and the great of the small; within the middling, there is the small of the middling, the middling of the middling, and the great of the middling; within the great, there is the small of the great, the middling of the great, and the great of the great. In accordance with this, it should be understood that the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, in an increasingly excellent manner, perform immeasurable distinctions of the maturation of sentient beings. As explained previously, through these methods, apart from requesting others, regarding the two kinds of happiness, from the maturation of faculties in the continuum to the maturation of faults, and from small maturation to great maturation, the Buddha's dharmas, the maturation of cause and effect, namely, what is called "the owner of who matures," and "all other sentient beings," and "other individuals," these three. Similarly, other sentient beings and other individuals also obtain faculties and so forth. Among these, the bodhisattva
