If asked, what is minor maturation? Minor maturation occurs due to two causes: faculties, roots of virtue, and consciousness. Regarding the cause of maturation, not being accustomed to it for a long time, the cause not being fully developed, and being accustomed to smallness. Intermediate maturation refers to the absence of either of these two causes, or the presence of either one, it should be known. Great maturation refers to the presence of both of these causes, it should be known. So, what are the methods for maturation? It should be known that there are twenty-seven types: growth of element, proximity of present conditions, entering, joyful adherence, initial entering, non-initial entering, distant purification, near purification, combination, thought, proximity of wealth, proximity of Dharma, aspiration through miraculous power, teaching the Dharma, secret teaching, differentiated teaching, small combination, intermediate combination, great combination, hearing, thinking, meditation, gathering, cutting off and acting by oneself, entrusting to others, and both of these. What is growth of element? Relying on the natural abundance of seeds of virtuous Dharma, from previous habituation with virtuous Dharma, the seeds of virtuous Dharma repeatedly increase, and the exceedingly increased arising and abiding is called growth of element. What is proximity of present conditions? It is teaching the non-inverted Dharma in this very life, and also holding onto it without inversion, and practicing the Dharma that accords with the Dharma as it is. Growth of element is the accomplishment of present maturation by the previous cause. Proximity of present conditions means that the cause is present and the maturation is also present, it should be known. What is entering? From the perspective of gaining faith, householders properly take up the training by abstaining from misconduct, and non-householders, if they renounce, take up the training of abstaining from desire.

It is to properly take the base. What is it to be happy to accept? Relying on the path that can liberate from all sufferings, and abandoning the extreme of making oneself exhausted, relying on the path of happiness, one is manifestly happy with the teachings of the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, that is what it is to be happy to accept. What is the initial entry? Relying solely on initially generating aversion to the dharmas that should be renounced, and also understanding the benefits of establishing meaning through reasoning, thereby entering, that is called the initial entry. What is not the initial entry? Relying on making those who have already entered fully mature, relying on the non-abandonment of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas, and also relying on repeatedly clarifying the places of liberation, thereby making the external environment fully mature, that is what it is. What is the extremely distant purification? Relying on laziness or not possessing favorable conditions, causing a long delay in time, changing many lifetimes or changing many kalpas, only then having the possibility of transforming into a state of purification, that is what it is. The opposite of this should be understood as the extremely near purification. What is diligence? Relying on the strong desire to obtain one's own benefit, also relying on the fear of falling into future lives, and also relying on the fear of being known by others for bad reputation in this very life, thereby constantly practicing the trainings, and guarding respectful behavior, that is what it is. What is intention? In order not to have this Dharma and Vinaya taken away, relying on the patience of truly contemplating the dharmas, and also relying on the increase of merits, thereby believing in the achievements of others, and having unwavering faith in the Three Jewels and in obtaining one's own benefit, that is what it is. What is the accumulation of resources? For those who completely lack all things such as food and drink, accumulating resources such as food and drink, and also for those who lack corresponding food and drink, accumulating corresponding resources such as food and drink, that is what it is. What is the accumulation of Dharma? By transmitting scriptures, or by giving dharmas through truly explaining the meaning, that is what it is.
