They also know the minds of others. With one ability to know the minds of others, they immediately and accurately know the mind of a single being—what that mind is, what it is like, what its nature is, and how much of it is present. With just one ability to know the minds of others, they immediately and accurately know the minds of many beings—what their minds are, what they are like, what their nature is, and how much of it is present. The supernormal knowledge of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas also knows whether beings' faculties are superior or not, knows various inclinations, knows various realms and behaviors, and appropriately and accurately guides them on various paths to liberation. This should be understood as their work. What is the knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas? Here, the Tathagata or Bodhisattva thoroughly knows, as it is, whether the exhaustion of defilements has been attained, whether the exhaustion of defilements has been attained by oneself or by others, or whether it has not been attained. They also thoroughly know, as it is, the means to attain the exhaustion of defilements for oneself and others. They also thoroughly know, as it is, what is the means and what is not the means. They also thoroughly know, as it is, the pride of attainment of the exhaustion of defilements by others. They also thoroughly know, as it is, the absence of pride. Although Bodhisattvas know all these things, they do not personally manifest the exhaustion of defilements. Therefore, Bodhisattvas do not abandon objects associated with defilements together with the defilements. They also do not become completely defiled by engaging with objects associated with defilements. This should be understood as the most powerful of all their powers. With the knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas themselves do not become completely defiled, and they also teach others and eliminate pride. This should be understood as their work. What is the power of Dharma? It is the power of generosity, the power of discipline, and the power of patience.
