The emanation that emanates is like this: food and drink, and so on; and jewels and pearls, and vaiḍūrya, and so on; and form, sound, smell, taste, and tangible objects, whatever external objects are included, all of which are emanated as desired. Those similar to oneself also have many different kinds: gods, nāgas, yakṣas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, great belly-goers, human forms, animals, pretas, sentient beings in hell, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and tathāgata bodies. If a bodhisattva himself is like this, and the emanation also emanates in the same way, then his emanation is similar to himself. If it is not like that, the emanation becomes dissimilar to himself. If it emanates as similar to other gods, then it is an emanation similar to others. If it emanates as dissimilar, then it is dissimilar to others. Just as with gods, so too with tathāgatas, it should be understood in the same way. So, what are the many bodily emanations? Here, the tathāgata or bodhisattva, in the immeasurable and countless realms of the ten directions, simultaneously performs various emanation forms for the benefit of immeasurable and countless sentient beings. The bodhisattva or tathāgata, even after passing away, blesses some emanations to remain. Some emanations of buddhas and bodhisattvas are merely to show sentient beings, like illusions. Some emanations appear in the form of wealth and property, which can perform the function of wealth and property, such as food, drink, vehicles, clothing, and so on, as well as jewels, pearls, vaiḍūrya, conch shells, agate, coral, and so on. These emanations appear in their original form and do not change; this is temporarily the bodily emanation. The emanation of speech is that which possesses a beautiful voice.

There are also [other qualities]. There is clarity of voice, association with oneself, association with others, non-association, belonging to teaching the Dharma, and belonging to exhortation from heedlessness. Among these, a melodious voice is a profound emanation of the speech of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, like the sound of a dragon, like the pleasing sound of a kalaviṅka, pleasing to the heart with joy, the emanation of speech that goes into cities, being both pleasant and delightful, pleasing to the ear, complete, conveying meaning, beautiful, without discord, independent, and inexhaustible. Among these, clarity of voice is when the Tathāgata or Bodhisattva wishes, in the assembly of gods, nāgas, yakṣas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, mahoragas, śrāvakas, and Bodhisattvas, a diverse assembly gathered and seated in the maṇḍala of the assembly, whether those who are far away at the end of a yojana or those who are near, they can all hear the utterly complete speech, and if they wish, they can make it heard with their voice in a small chiliocosm, or a dvichiliocosm, or a trichiliocosm, or in countless immeasurable world realms of the ten directions, and from that sound, they can also teach the Dharma to sentient beings, and for the benefit of sentient beings, various kinds of transformations will occur. Among these, the emanation of speech associated with oneself is when one teaches the Dharma with one's own emanation of speech, or exhorts from heedlessness. Association with others is when others teach the Dharma with their emanation of speech, or exhort from heedlessness. Among these, the non-associated emanation of speech is when speech arises from the sky, from emanation, not from the mindstream of sentient beings. Among these, the emanation of teaching the Dharma is for the sake of correctly showing the reasoning to those who are confused about this and that. Among these, the emanation of emanation is for the sake of causing those who are not confused and have gained faith but have become heedless to feel ashamed of heedlessness and to make them correctly uphold diligence.

Furthermore, the various kinds of manifestations, if summarized, should be understood as manifestations of the body, manifestations of purity, and manifestations of the environment. Thus, these miraculous transformations of manifestations, if distinguished one by one, should be understood as inconceivable and immeasurable. These two kinds of miracles of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, if clearly summarized, are to accomplish two purposes: to guide sentient beings through the miraculous power of transformation, thereby leading them to enter the Buddha's teachings; and to conveniently accomplish benefits for suffering sentient beings in various ways. What, then, is the knowledge of past lives of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas? In this regard, the Tathagata or Bodhisattva himself correctly remembers his own past lives, just as it is widely recorded in the sutras: "When I appeared among a certain sentient being, my name was so-and-so," thereby remembering all the aggregates of the body of sentient beings, and so on. Just as one correctly remembers oneself, one also causes others to remember, and one also remembers others. For the infinite assembly of sentient beings of the past, one remembers oneself and also causes others to remember, just as one widely applies, "When I appeared among a certain sentient being, my name was so-and-so." All the past lives of those sentient beings are correctly remembered just as they are in one's own present life. Even the smallest details are correctly remembered. Whether past actions were few or many, whatever was previously remembered and then forgotten is also remembered. In the manner of an uninterrupted moment, in whatever order it continued without ceasing, it is also correctly remembered. The extent to which it can be counted by counting kalpas is also remembered. What cannot be counted by counting kalpas, that is, the inconceivable and immeasurable, is also remembered. In short, for his knowledge of past lives, it is without obstruction, whatever he wishes, however he wishes, and for as long as he wishes.
