And also think like this: Is there a Dharma that is inherently perfect, existing solely within or outside, apart from my birthplaces? Or does it exist where both are absent? Where do names, concepts, designations, and proximate designations apply? Contemplate this in your mind. When you contemplate in that way, your Dharma does not appear, and you will think: Only these adventitious Dharmas have adventitious names. Son of good family, when you arise and gain the understanding that your own name is adventitious, you should also properly contemplate in your mind what is called the eye in relation to your eye, as well as the perception of the eye, and the designation of the eye. And also think like this: Regarding this eye, there are two ways to observe: one is the name, concept, and designation called 'eye'; the other is merely the thing itself that possesses the name, concept, and designation. There is nothing higher than this. There is nothing more excellent than this. Therefore, the name, concept, and designation of the eye are not the eye itself; and the thing from which the perception of the eye arises is also not the eye by nature. Why is that? Because without the name of the eye, the concept of the eye, and the designation of the eye, no one will have a perception of the eye. If the thing were completely perfected by the very nature of the name by which it is called, then even there, it would be necessary to rely on it in order to generate such a perception of the eye. If, solely by the nature of not having heard the name and not having fully analyzed it, one could generate a perception of the eye in relation to the thing, then that perception would not appear either. Therefore, consider that the name of the eye and the concept of the eye also arise adventitiously in relation to adventitious Dharmas. Thus, when you properly contemplate this inner eye, you will also generate and obtain an adventitious perception of the perception of the eye. Just as with the eye, one should understand in a broad sense from the ears, nose, tongue, and body, including seeing, hearing, distinguishing, discerning, as well as obtaining, seeking, and following with the mind.

And so it is also among later investigators. In short, a sudden perception will arise and be obtained for the perceptions of all dharmas. If this is the case, you will fully grasp the path of practice that is separate from whatever perception you have of them. In detail, you will fully grasp the path of practice that is separate from whatever perception there is between all dharmas. Therefore, with the wisdom of thoroughly investigating all knowable things, you suddenly perceive the perceptions of all dharmas, thereby eliminating the perception of all elaborations on all dharmas. By entering into the non-conceptual, signless mind that grasps only the meaning, abide in that object many times. Having done so, you will attain one-pointedness of mind through the reasoning of the Tathagata's pure wisdom of samadhi. If you contemplate the unattractive, do not abandon this contemplation. If you contemplate love, or this very dependent arising, or the division of elements, or exhaling and inhaling, or from the first dhyana to the vast realm of neither perception nor non-perception, or the bodhisattva's dhyana, or clairvoyance, or samadhi, or absorption into the immeasurable, do not abandon this contemplation. By doing so, your bodhisattva's contemplation will ultimately and certainly lead to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Thus, he taught the instruction. This should be understood as the path that bodhisattvas take to all things. The Tathagatas of the past also instructed the first bodhisattvas in this way. The future ages will also teach in this way. The present age also teaches in this way. If even a Shravaka practices with this contemplation, and if he realizes this contemplation as it is, then for the realization of dharmas, clairvoyance will become very swift. The power of knowing the path to all things.

Indeed, the Tathagata thoroughly knows how to be liberated from all suffering, as well as the correct path of non-liberation, just as it is. Having abandoned the path of non-liberation, he engages in the path of liberation. With the power of knowing the recollection of past lives, the Tathagata remembers the limits of past lives, as well as the order of births, and teaches in order to cause the minds of those being tamed to become weary and to generate faith. He also subdues the Shramanas and Brahmins who speak of permanence. With the power of knowing death and birth, the Tathagata, beginning with the Shravakas, also prophesies the time of death and birth in past lives, and also subdues the Shramanas and Brahmins who speak of annihilation. With the power of knowing the exhaustion of defilements, the Tathagata has no doubt or hesitation even about his own liberation, and also subdues the Shramanas and Brahmins who hold pride in considering themselves Arhats. It should be understood that this is the activity of the ten powers of the Tathagata. So, what is the order of these ten powers of the Tathagata? Immediately upon attaining the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, the Tathagata simultaneously attained all ten powers. Having attained them simultaneously, these powers also manifest in sequence. At the moment of attaining perfect enlightenment, the Tathagata, with the power of knowing what is and is not, only sees well in establishing the causes and effects of phenomena. Having observed, for those beings in the desire realm who have the same karmic potential, and the differences in the painful results, with the power of knowing karma as one's own, he teaches to completely abandon non-virtuous actions and to engage in virtuous actions. For sentient beings in the desire realm who are free from worldly desire, with the power of knowing meditation, liberation, and absorption, he enables them to become free from worldly desire, and just as it is.
