Those with wisdom should train with all their ability and effort, for there is nothing higher than this, nothing more excellent than this. In the past and future times, whatever has been trained and will be trained for the benefit of oneself and others, all of that is also trained in these ten aspects of self and other benefit, there is nothing higher than this, nothing more excellent than this. The third chapter, concerning the benefit of oneself and others, from the Bodhisattva-bhumi-yoga-sthāna. What is that very meaning? In brief, there are two aspects: starting from how it exists, what is the very truth of all dharmas; and starting from how much it exists, what is the very totality of all dharmas. Thus, truth and totality should be understood as all the very meaning of dharmas. That very meaning, if divided in detail, has four aspects: worldly convention, reasoned convention, the sphere of knowledge of the complete purification of the afflictive obscurations, and the sphere of knowledge of the complete purification of the obscurations to knowledge. As for worldly convention, it is that which, through a mind that has entered by following familiarity with conventions, the views of all worldly people are the same regarding things, such as saying of earth, "This is earth, not fire." Just as with earth, so too with fire, water, wind, forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, food, drink, vehicles, clothing, ornaments, utensils, incense, flower garlands, unguents, dance, song, music, light, the enjoyment of men and women, fields, shops, household objects, happiness and suffering are also the same, saying, "This is suffering, not happiness," "This is happiness, not suffering," and so forth. In short, it is "This is this, not that," "This is like this, not otherwise," like this, all worldly people are certain, and the convention that arises from one's own conceptualization through names that come from one to another. Unconsidered, unexamined, uninvestigated.

Whatever is apprehended is called the conventional truth. What is the truth known by reason? The knowledge of those who are skilled in the meaning of noble reason, intelligent, logicians, endowed with discernment, the place of understanding in logic, arising from one's own courage, individual sentient beings, those who abide in discernment after discernment, is the extremely differentiated and definite object of knowledge, based on the valid means of perception, inference, and trustworthy scripture. Whatever is well-established and well-placed by reason is called the truth known by reason. What is the truth of the object of knowledge of the knowledge that is completely purified of the obscuration of afflictions? All the uncontaminated of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and the means of attaining the uncontaminated, and what is obtained after the uncontaminated, the object to be made the object of worldly knowledge, that is called the truth of the object of knowledge of the knowledge that is completely purified of the obscuration of afflictions. Because by focusing on this, knowledge is completely purified from the obscuration of afflictions, and afterwards it also truly abides in the state of being without obscuration. Therefore, it is called the truth of the object of knowledge of the knowledge that is completely purified of the obscuration of afflictions. What is that truth? It is the four noble truths, namely, the truth of suffering, the truth of origin, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. Knowledge arises when these four noble truths are thoroughly distinguished, realized, and after realization. The realization of truth is also when Hearers and Solitary Buddhas only focus on the aggregates, and when they do not focus on a self that is separate from the aggregates and different in substance, when they become such, the view that there is no person other than the heap of wisdom that depends on dependent origination, arising and ceasing, arises from habituation. What is the truth of the object of knowledge that is completely purified of the obscuration of knowledge? What obstructs the arising of knowledge for what is to be known is called obscuration. What is the object of knowledge of the knowledge that is completely liberated from the obscuration of knowledge, that is the completely purified obscuration of knowledge.
