Protecting myself, or meditating on immeasurable qualities such as love, or anything similar to that, this is meditation on the side of merit. Relying on meditation, one can combine the wisdom of listening, thinking, and meditating, starting from being skilled in the aggregates, as previously stated in the chapter on diligence, all of which should be narrated, this is meditation on the side of wisdom. In short, merit and wisdom have six aspects. Each of these distinctions should be understood as immeasurable. What are the causes of merit and wisdom? In short, the causes of merit and wisdom should be understood as having three aspects: the desire to obtain, abide in, and increase merit and wisdom, as well as conducive and non-contradictory conditions, and prior habituation to merit and wisdom. Among these, the non-contradictory condition is this: inverted conditions do not approach and do not become close, while non-inverted conditions do approach and become close. For example, meeting with evil friends and showing merit and wisdom in an inverted way, or taking it in an inverted way with inverted attention, this is called the inverted condition becoming close. The white side, which is the opposite of this, should be understood as the non-inverted condition not becoming close. For the sake of obtaining, abiding in, and increasing merit and wisdom, abandoning and not generating any factors that obstruct the union, this is also called the non-contradictory condition of the Bodhisattva's merit and wisdom. If any of these three causes is incomplete, then merit will not arise, nor will wisdom arise, it should be understood. What are the fruits of merit and wisdom? Relying on merit, the Bodhisattva revolves in samsara without harm and is not greatly tormented by suffering, and is able to benefit sentient beings as he pleases, and is able to help sentient beings. Relying on wisdom, the Bodhisattva is able to perfectly and completely uphold merit.

Ki. By non-perverted and skillful means, in various immeasurable ways, until the attainment of unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Thus, the fruits of merit and wisdom, in brief, should be known as fourfold. The detailed divisions of these are immeasurable. Among these, whatever is maturation, whatever is the cause of maturation, and whatever is the fruit of maturation, all of these depend on merit and arise from merit. Merit also depends on wisdom and arises from wisdom. Therefore, these two are also the main factors for attaining unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Merit is the main factor, and wisdom is unsurpassed. If either merit or wisdom is lacking, then that Bodhisattva will not attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Thus, it should be known that this is the benefit of oneself and others for a Bodhisattva, summarized as cause and effect. Among these, what is the benefit of oneself and others for a Bodhisattva in this life? What is the benefit of oneself and others in other lifetimes? If it is said, it is the accomplishment of enjoyment through the actions of a person, through understanding the place of crafts and the place of activities, and also the moderate enjoyment of what has been accomplished, and the maturation of the fruits of desire, the enjoyment in this life of the matured fruit of past actions, and the Bodhisattva being skilled in transforming meditation, therefore acting in this life for the sake of happiness, and relying on that, for the sake of accomplishing the benefit of others in this life, relying on meditation, and whatever is the Nirvana of the Thus-Gone One attained in this life, and the Dharma that causes the attainment of Nirvana in this life, conditioned and unconditioned, mundane and supramundane, all of these are called the benefit of oneself for a Bodhisattva in this life. Just like the Bodhisattva, it should be known that whatever other sentient beings are subdued by the Bodhisattva are also for the benefit of others. Next

In the future, in the desire realm, becoming perfect in enjoyment, and in the future becoming perfect in body, and in the future being born in meditation and the formless realm, and in this life accompanied by suffering and displeasure, thereby separately examining, in the future becoming perfect in enjoyment and body, and meditation and being born in the formless realm, what is it that depends on its cause, one should know that it is the bodhisattva's self-benefit and other-benefit in other lives. In this life, accompanied by happiness and pleasure, what is it that depends on the cause of becoming perfect in enjoyment and body, and what is the meditation and formless absorption that is not in accordance with the aspect of decline in this life, one should know that it is the self-benefit and other-benefit of this life and other lives. What is the ultimate self-benefit and other-benefit? What is not ultimate? In the desire realm, becoming perfect in enjoyment and body, possessing cause and effect, and the worldly purification of ordinary beings, possessing cause and effect, this is not the ultimate self-benefit and other-benefit. What is the complete abandonment of all afflictions, and the eightfold noble path, and the attainment of the supramundane virtuous dharmas by relying on it, that is the ultimate self-benefit and other-benefit. Regarding this, by nature, and by complete decline, and by completely exhausting by enjoying the fruit, by three causes, thereby knowing the ultimate and the non-ultimate. Regarding this, nirvana is ultimate by nature. All conditioned phenomena are not ultimate. The eightfold noble path is not completely declining, and because it does not become completely exhausted by enjoying the fruit, therefore it is ultimate. Other than that, the dharmas that possess good defiled dharmas are completely declining, and because they become completely exhausted by enjoying the fruit, therefore they are not ultimate, thus the bodhisattvas' self-benefit and other-benefit, the abbreviated and extensive ten aspects are bodhisattvas.
