, as well as knowing tastes, the head possessing a crown jewel is accomplished. By striving in virtue and persevering without discouragement, one accomplishes a torso like a lion and cheeks like a lion. By looking equally with a mind to benefit sentient beings, one accomplishes even teeth, sapphire eyes, and eyelashes like a bull king. By not being content with little and practicing, one accomplishes the voice of Brahma. Thus, by perfecting the end of actions, in these four ways, the thirty-two major marks of a great being of the Bodhisattvas are obtained and become purified. Among them, in the lineage ground, it should be understood that these marks of the Bodhisattvas exist only as seeds. In the ground of practice with aspiration, it should be understood that one has entered the method of obtaining them. In the ground of pure higher intention, it should be understood that they have been obtained. On the grounds above that of a non-Bodhisattva, it should be understood that they are purified. On the ultimate ground of going to the Tathagata, it should be understood that they are extremely purified and extremely unsurpassed. Among them, since these marks are with form, they are easily understood by inferior, intermediate, and superior sentient beings, therefore, among all the Buddha's teachings, the marks of a great being, only these are established as the marks of a great being. These thirty-two marks of a great being are held in the manner of a basis and beautified by excellent form, therefore they are called excellent signs. Among them, in short, with a mass of merit equal to the merit of all sentient beings, each pore of the body of the Tathagata is manifestly accomplished. As many masses of merit as enter into all the hairs, with that many masses of merit, one excellent sign is manifestly accomplished. As many masses of merit as enter into all the excellent signs, with a hundred times more masses of merit than that, one mark of the Tathagata is manifestly accomplished. Except for the urna hair and the crown of the head, as many masses of merit as enter into all the marks, from those above

The accumulation of merit increased a hundred thousandfold manifestly accomplishes the ūrṇākośa. From the immeasurable accumulation of merit that arises from the ūrṇākośa, increased a millionfold, one accomplishes having a uṣṇīṣa and the invisibility of the crown of the head. From the immeasurable accumulation of merit that arises from the ūrṇākośa, increased by a hundred thousand koṭis, one manifestly accomplishes another dharma conch, other than the marks and excellent signs of the Tathāgata. Therefore, if the Tathāgata wishes to make known by speech to the endless and limitless realms of the world, he can do so. Thus, the body of the Tathāgata is inconceivable and unsurpassed, perfectly complete in all aspects, and is accomplished by an immeasurable accumulation of merit. The virtuous dharmas that accomplish the marks and excellent signs, in brief, should be understood as arising from three immeasurable causes. Because they are accomplished by having been practiced for countless eons, there is immeasurable time, benefiting immeasurable beings, and being dominated by the thought of happiness, there is immeasurable intention, immeasurable kinds of virtuous actions, and immeasurable nature. Therefore, the attainment of the marks and excellent signs of the Tathāgatas is said to be truly accomplished from an immeasurable accumulation of merit. The fifth chapter, on the marks and excellent signs, from the final stage of the Yogācārabhūmi of the Bodhisattva. Twenty-first fascicle. Among these, what are the four kinds of complete purity? They are purity of place, purity of object, purity of mind, and purity of wisdom. What is purity of place? All evil destinies that are in accordance with the side of afflictions, together with their latent tendencies, are completely and permanently eliminated from the place, and one has the power to take birth, abide, and die and transmigrate as one wishes. This is called complete purity of all places. What is purity of object? One has power over all objects of manifestation, transformation, and display.
