A Bodhisattva does not always take hold of all retinues. He does not take hold, nor does he act otherwise. Among them, those sentient beings who abide in small maturity are called the long-term holding of the Bodhisattva, because they have the share of being purified by a long time. Those who abide in medium maturity are called non-long-term holding, because they have the share of being purified without delay. Those sentient beings who abide in great maturity are called the last of the Bodhisattva's holdings, because they have the share of being purified in this life. Thus, these six aspects are the good and complete holding of sentient beings by the Bodhisattvas, because the holders, the Bodhisattvas of the past, future, and present, hold all sentient beings. They will hold, they are holding, and there is nothing above that, and there is nothing more than that. Thus, the Bodhisattvas who have entered into the good and complete holding of sentient beings should know that they will encounter twelve kinds of harm and fear, and the Bodhisattva should be skilled in them. To sentient beings who abide in opposition, either harm should be done or they should be abandoned, which is the Bodhisattva's encounter with harm and fear. One constantly practices fierce application to sentient beings, and also protects the afflictions of one's own mind, which is encountering harm and fear. There is only a small amount of Dharma to be given, and many beggars come to beg, which is encountering harm and fear. He is alone, and many sentient beings entrust him to help with various arising events, which is encountering harm and fear. The mind should not be in a place of carelessness, the worldly samadhi root of virtue, and taking the fruit of samadhi, arising in the realm of the gods, the mind should not be, which is encountering harm and fear.

Wishing to do one's own thing, but being unable to benefit sentient beings, this is encountering harm and suffering. Teaching the Dharma to foolish, deceitful, and uncivilized beings, or abandoning them, this is encountering harm and suffering. Always seeing the faults of samsara, yet not abandoning samsara, this is encountering harm and suffering. Dying with superior intention not yet purified and mindfulness declining, this is encountering harm and suffering. When intention is not yet purified, being asked by others for extremely cherished possessions, this is encountering harm and suffering. For sentient beings with various different thoughts and desires, one should communicate or abandon them, this is encountering harm and suffering. Even though one must be very cautious, one should not completely abandon all afflictions, this is encountering harm and suffering. Therefore, for a Bodhisattva who encounters harm and suffering, sometimes one needs to measure the extent of the harm and apply the appropriate measures accordingly. Sometimes one needs to examine the person. Sometimes one needs to firmly focus on the goal, correctly choose the cause, abide in it, and make good aspirations. Sometimes one should not let the mind enter into it. Sometimes one needs to examine more extensively and individually, abide in it, not be discouraged, and be patient. Sometimes one needs to remain neutral. Sometimes one needs to exert effort and persevere. Sometimes one needs to be skilled in means. Therefore, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in the correct antidotes, even if encountering and experiencing all harm and suffering, will not be discouraged, and will protect himself well. This is the end of the Yoga Practice Place of the Bodhisattva Grounds, the Second Chapter on Complete Retention. It should be known that there are seven grounds possessing these thirteen abodes as explained above, namely the six grounds of a Bodhisattva, and one guiding ground common to both Bodhisattvas and Tathagatas, which are the Lineage Ground, the Ground of Practice through Aspiration, the Ground of Purification of Superior Intention, the Ground of Accomplishment of Practice, the Ground of Certainty, the Ground of Certainty of Practice, and the Ultimate
