The bodhisattva householder is not like that. Furthermore, the ordained bodhisattva, because he necessarily abides in asceticism, is respectful in speech to others, but the bodhisattva householder is not like that. The bodhisattva householder and the ordained one, the two, should be known to enter into great distinction by means of such concordant dharmas. The second chapter, the section on the place of yoga of the concordant dharma of the ground of the bodhisattva ground. Seventeenth fascicle. Summary: For sentient beings, the wise, pleasing is seven kinds, those thoughts are fifteen, and ten actions are taught to be done. For sentient beings, there are seven kinds of pleasing qualities of bodhisattvas. Bodhisattvas who possess pleasing qualities are called those with virtuous thoughts, and supremely virtuous thoughts. What are the seven kinds of pleasing qualities? Fearlessness, reason, non-weariness, non-solicitation, non-contamination, vastness, and equality. The bodhisattva does not act pleasingly out of fear of anyone, but rather engages in all agreeable, beneficial, and pleasant actions of body, speech, and mind in harmony. The bodhisattva does not generate pleasing qualities in sentient beings through unreasonableness. For example, it does not arise in order to introduce them to places that are unlawful, undisciplined, or unsuitable for assembly and practice. The bodhisattva, starting from the meaning of those things, is completely unwearied in all ways, and thus is pleasing to sentient beings. The bodhisattva is pleasing to sentient beings without solicitation, not because some people solicit. He is pleasing with an uncontaminated mind, not because he hopes to receive benefits in return from others, or because he hopes for a painful ripening in a future life. In that way, the bodhisattva is pleasing to sentient beings without cause. The pleasing quality of the bodhisattva is vast, not small. How does the bodhisattva harm those sentient beings?

Even when encountering all unpleasant situations, one does not abandon them. It is possible to make oneself dislike pleasant things. But for others, one does not wish to commit any sins in any way. This is the meaning of vastness. Bodhisattvas' agreeableness has such characteristics and qualities, and it is equal and the same for all sentient beings, not just limited to certain sentient beings. Therefore, bodhisattvas who possess these seven kinds of agreeableness are called those with virtuous thoughts, supremely virtuous thoughts. Having faith in the Buddha's teachings, individually discerning, determining, with faith as the guide, and with the discernment of the Dharma as the guide, these are the bodhisattva's higher intentions. These higher intentions of the bodhisattva can be summarized into fifteen aspects. What are these fifteen? They are the intention of excellence, the intention of ethics, the intention of going to the other shore, the intention of that very meaning, the intention of power, the intention of benefit, the intention of happiness, the intention of superiority, the intention of steadfastness, the intention of non-deception, the intention of impurity, the intention of purity, the intention of extreme purity, the intention of taming, and the intention of being born together. Among these, the bodhisattva's higher intention towards the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the Three Jewels, is called the intention of excellence. The higher intention of the bodhisattva in properly taking the vows of ethics is called the intention of ethics. The higher intention of the bodhisattva to accomplish generosity, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom is called the intention of going to the other shore. The higher intention towards the profound suchness of the ultimate truth of the Dharma, the selflessness of phenomena and persons, is called the intention of that very meaning. The higher intention towards the inconceivable power of the Buddha and bodhisattvas' miraculous abilities or innate power is called the intention of power.

The wish to accomplish good deeds for sentient beings is called the mind of benefit. The wish to increase the benefit for sentient beings is called the mind of happiness. For sentient beings, the mind without defilement and the mind without association with painful ripening is called the superior mind. Focusing one's mind solely on the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment is called the steadfast mind. The aspiration with non-inverted wisdom regarding the means to benefit sentient beings and the means to enlightenment is called the non-deceptive mind. On all the grounds of practice through aspiration, the superior aspiration of the Bodhisattvas is the impure mind. From the ground of pure aspiration up to the ground of definite conduct, the superior aspiration of the Bodhisattvas is the pure mind. On the ground of reaching the ultimate, the superior aspiration of the Bodhisattvas is the extremely pure mind. Among these, the impure superior aspiration is called taming, because it needs to be examined separately. The pure and extremely pure superior aspirations are called the co-emergent mind, because it is naturally its essence and the basis is very stable. In short, Bodhisattvas, with the pure superior aspiration, including all fifteen, perform ten activities. What are the ten? With the supreme mind, the offerings to the Three Jewels are applied to all the supreme aspects of the accumulations of enlightenment. With the mind of discipline, after the Bodhisattva has properly taken the vows of discipline, even for the sake of life, they will not intentionally commit offenses, and even if they do, they will quickly confess them. With the mind of the pāramitās, they constantly cultivate virtuous dharmas, abide in mindfulness, and cause themselves to abide in the supreme mindfulness. With the superior mind of the sole meaning, for the sake of sentient beings, with a non-pervasively defiled mind, they also wander in samsara, and they do not abandon the superior aspiration of nirvana. With the superior power of
