That which is called happiness, if summarized, is of two types: with outflows and without outflows. Among these, that which is without outflows refers to the happiness of those in training and those beyond training; that which is with outflows refers to the three realms, namely, that which corresponds to the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. Specifically, the six sense bases of all beings in the three realms, from the pleasure arising from contact with the eye sense base to the pleasure arising from contact with the mind sense base, are all included. These six types of happiness can also be divided into two types: bodily happiness and mental happiness. Among these, that which corresponds to the five aggregates of consciousness is bodily happiness; that which corresponds to mind consciousness is mental happiness. Regarding the various kinds of suffering such as cold, heat, hunger, thirst, and the many different kinds of suffering, by pacifying the suffering of cold, heat, hunger, thirst, etc., through remedies, the happiness that arises at the very moment when suffering is pacified is called the happiness of counteracting suffering. Entering into the cessation of perception and feeling is called the happiness of the cessation of the continuum of feeling. Harmless happiness, if summarized, can be understood as being of four types: the happiness of manifestation, the happiness of serenity, the happiness of near serenity, and the happiness of perfect enlightenment. Among these, having gone forth from home to homelessness solely through faith, having completely renounced, and having been liberated from the various sufferings of home, etc., is called the happiness of manifestation. Having abandoned desires and sinful, unwholesome dharmas, through serenity, the joy and happiness born from serenity in the first dhyana is called the happiness of serenity. In the second dhyana and so on, when investigation and analysis are nearly pacified, it is called the happiness of near serenity. Having been completely separated from all afflictions, and having directly realized all knowable objects as they are, the happiness that is obtained through perfectly attaining enlightenment is called the happiness of perfect enlightenment. Among these, the happiness of cause is happiness because it becomes the cause of happiness, but its nature is not so. The happiness of feeling is not because of the entity of the cause, but because of the nature.

Just so! The happiness that is the antidote to suffering is neither caused by material objects, nor is it caused by its own nature. It is only that suffering is pacified, and the elimination of suffering is happiness. The uninterrupted happiness of feeling is neither caused by material objects, nor is it caused by its own nature, nor is it caused by the elimination of suffering. In this, any feeling is suffering, and truly feeling suffering, abiding only for that moment, pacification is happiness, belonging to harmless happiness. The ultimate perfect enlightenment happiness is that in the future, truly feeling suffering, that is permanently pacified, and in this life, all the bad habits of the afflictive side, the basis of dependence, are completely eliminated, so it is happiness. The remaining parts of that harmless happiness are also in accordance with that ultimate happiness, and are on its side, and are its guide, so it should be known as harmless happiness. Thus, the Bodhisattva is the one who accomplishes the happiness of the beneficial side for sentient beings, and not the harmful side. The happiness of the harmful side should be completely known by true wisdom as it is, and after completely knowing it, sentient beings should be made to cease their desire for it, and effort should be made to cease and eliminate it from it as much as possible. Whatever turns into benefit, even if it is related to suffering, yet relying on the skillful means of the Bodhisattva, one should accomplish things accompanied by suffering and displeasure for sentient beings even if they are unwilling. Whatever turns into non-benefit, even if it is related to happiness, yet relying on skillful means, one should stop and guide things accompanied by happiness and pleasure for sentient beings even if they are unwilling. Why is this? Because accomplishing happiness accompanied by suffering, and stopping non-benefit accompanied by happiness, it should be known that this is definitely for sentient beings to have only happiness in the future. Therefore, whatever Bodhisattva desires to benefit sentient beings, in reality, it should be known that they desire happiness. Beneficial...
