Thinking that is the meaning of their own nature. Having thus skillfully understood the meaning of the nature of all dharmas, not seeking other meanings from it, rejoicing in understanding that meaning, one will also obtain great and supreme joy. That bodhisattva, relying on those words of the dharani that have been obtained, is called the patience of the bodhisattva. By obtaining that patience, that bodhisattva will also soon obtain pure superior intention and will abide in the great patience of the stage of conduct by faith. It should be known that this is the dharani by which bodhisattvas obtain the patience of the bodhisattva. Among them, the dharani of dharma and the dharani of meaning are obtained by the bodhisattva when, after the first countless eons have passed, they enter the stage of pure superior intention. They are definite, firm, and vast. Thereafter, they are obtained by the power of aspiration or by relying on meditation. They are neither definite, nor firm, nor vast. Just as the dharani of dharma and meaning are, so too should the dharani of secret mantra be understood to be the same. The dharani for obtaining the patience of the bodhisattva will be obtained just as it was said before. A bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will obtain all these dharanis. If any one is lacking, it will not be obtained. What are the four? That is, not being particularly attached to desires, not generating jealousy towards things that others have not heard, that is, being without jealousy, completely giving away all that is begged for and giving without regret, and beginning from the bodhisattva pitaka or the mother of the pitaka, always rejoicing in the dharma, that is, rejoicing in the dharma. Among them, what is the aspiration of the bodhisattvas? It should be seen as being summarized into five aspects: the aspiration of generating the mind, the aspiration of birth, the aspiration of the field of activity, the aspiration of truth, and the great aspiration. Among them, the first, generating the mind for unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, is called the aspiration of generating the mind of the bodhisattva. In the latter, sentient beings

Wishing to be born among beings in accordance with the meaning is called the aspiration of a Bodhisattva's birth. Wishing to perfectly and truly distinguish all dharmas, and wishing for the object of cultivating virtuous dharmas such as immeasurable ones, is called the aspiration of a Bodhisattva's field of activity. In short, in detail, wishing for the Bodhisattva to gather all virtues, and to gather all qualities, is called the Bodhisattva's true aspiration. The great aspiration of a Bodhisattva should be understood from that very true aspiration. There are ten aspects to it: In the future, making offerings to the Tathagata, and performing all aspects of service immeasurably, is the first great aspiration. To fully grasp and protect the sacred Dharma of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and to truly grasp the principles of the Dharma, is a great aspiration. From residing in the Tushita heaven, as before, up to complete Nirvana, is a great aspiration. And the great aspiration to perfectly practice all aspects of a Bodhisattva's conduct, the great aspiration to fully ripen all sentient beings, the great aspiration to truly reveal all realms of the world, the great aspiration to completely purify the Buddha-fields, for the sake of entering the Great Vehicle, all Bodhisattvas, and the great aspiration to make intention and action consistent, and the great aspiration to make all true actions fruitful, and the great aspiration to awaken to manifest complete perfect enlightenment, the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. What is the Bodhisattva's Samadhi of emptiness? Here, the Bodhisattva is separated from the nature of the self of all expressions, and after seeing the object of the nature of the inexpressible, wherever the mind abides, that is called its Samadhi of emptiness. What is the desireless Samadhi? Here, the Bodhisattva, in the very object of the inexpressible nature, the afflictions arising from inverted discrimination

Because of attachment and being completely occupied by suffering, having truly seen the faults of many defects, later not desiring it, the mind abiding in advance, that is called its desireless samadhi. What is signless samadhi? Here, a Bodhisattva contemplates the aspect of the very object of the inexpressible nature, eliminates all signs of proliferation, and makes the mind abide by truly and peacefully attending to it as it is, that is called its signless samadhi. Why are these three samadhis established? Because there is nothing higher than this, and there is nothing more excellent than this. These two, existence and non-existence, wherein conditioned and unconditioned are existence, and self or mine is non-existence. Wherein, from desiring the conditioned as disagreeing and true, the desireless samadhi is established. From desiring the unconditioned nirvana and truly holding manifest joy, the signless samadhi is established. For that which is only the object of non-existence, a Bodhisattva should not desire or not desire, but should only truly see it as non-existent as it is. Having relied on the power of that seeing, one should know that the emptiness samadhi is established. Thus, a Bodhisattva practices these three samadhis, and also truly understands how to establish them. Furthermore, he truly understands the manner in which the Shravakas learn about other aspects, and the three samadhis that are truly accomplished, by entering the manner of establishing and entering the manner of meditating. These four Dharma seals are these, for the sake of purifying sentient beings, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas teach. What are the four? All conditioned things are impermanent, this is a Dharma seal; all conditioned things are suffering, this is a Dharma seal; all phenomena are without self, this is a Dharma seal; nirvana is peace, this is a Dharma seal.
