I, with the superior intention of entering into great compassion, completely take upon myself all the sufferings of all sentient beings, and also cause others to take them upon themselves in the same way. Furthermore, with a mind possessing goodness and the desire to learn, I confess separately to all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, in all directions, all the mistakes and faults that have arisen in the past and present, and also cause other beings to take them upon themselves in the same way. By confessing mistakes separately in this way without interruption, one will be completely liberated from all karmic obscurations in a short time. Moreover, a Bodhisattva with magical powers who has attained mastery over the mind relies on the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha in all directions, as well as on sentient beings, and accumulates immeasurable merit through many kinds of emanations. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva cultivates loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, and also causes others to take them upon themselves in the same way. In this way, a Bodhisattva can accomplish great roots of virtue with immeasurable fruits in a short time. How does a Bodhisattva eliminate the anger of angry sentient beings? How does he lead ordinary people onto the path? How does he ripen those who have already entered the path? How does he liberate those who have already ripened? In order to accomplish these four benefits for sentient beings, a Bodhisattva, in short, should understand that there are only six methods: compliance, abiding, thoughts of non-compliance, arising from coercion, responding with love, and purification is the sixth method. Among these, the Bodhisattva's method of compliance is as follows: For those sentient beings whom the Bodhisattva wishes to teach the Dharma, he first eliminates the anger of those who are angry with his actions through gentle and supple actions of body and speech, as well as through close giving and actions that correspond to compliance. Having eliminated anger, he generates joy and respect. Having generated joy and respect, he then teaches the Dharma...

arise. After that, he teaches them the Dharma. The Dharma that is taught should also be appropriate to their faculties, easy to understand, able to communicate in a timely manner, gradual, not inverted or confused, and meaningful. He does not create disputes. He has a great desire to subdue sentient beings, and also possesses a compassionate heart. He subdues sentient beings through miracles and the complete expression of mind, or through teaching the Dharma in a rational way, or by entrusting it to others, or through many diverse manifestations. He elaborates on meaningful concise treatises, condenses overly extensive treatises, and similarly, quotes scriptures, repeats teachings, distinguishes occasions for questioning, and excellently explains the meaning of the Dharma that has been upheld and received. He benefits sentient beings through instructions and subsequent teachings that are in accordance with the doors of meditative stabilization that possess all aims, and universally accomplishes the benefit of sentient beings. Some sentient beings, because they do not understand the meaning of the Tathagata's intention in the profound sutras on emptiness spoken by the Tathagata, and because they do not truly understand the meaning of those sutras that teach that all phenomena are without self-nature, that all phenomena are without substance, without arising, without ceasing, like the sky, like illusions and dreams, become frightened and think that these are not spoken by the Tathagata, and thus completely abandon all these sutras. To those sentient beings, the Bodhisattva, skilled in methods of harmonization, makes them accord with those sutras, truly makes them understand the meaning of the Tathagata's intention, and leads those sentient beings to accept them. He also makes them accord in this way. In this way, these dharmas are not completely non-existent, but these dharmas do not have the self-nature of expression, therefore they are called without self-nature. That which exists as the object of expression upon which speech proceeds, that is, the self-nature of any speech that is spoken
