And also, by directing oneself to that, one also abides correctly. Thus, when the mind is directed to that, it is correctly gathered by the power of mindfulness, and since it is not distracted, it is made to abide by gathering it, and it is made to abide closely. Then, by the power of discriminating awareness, it is not allowed to stray to thoughts and the characteristics of the near afflictions, so it is tamed and pacified. By the power of diligence, both of those are not accepted as arising, and it is also made into a single stream. By the power of complete familiarity, it is made into samadhi. In that, it should be known that the nine states of mind have four mental engagements: engaging with effort, engaging with interruption, engaging without interruption, and engaging without effort. In that, for making abide and making abide correctly, there is the mental engagement of engaging with effort. For making abide by gathering, making abide closely, taming, pacifying, and making abide closely in peace, there is the mental engagement of engaging with interruption. For making into a single stream, there is the mental engagement of engaging without interruption. For making into samadhi, there is the mental engagement of engaging without effort. Thus, those mental engagements are the aspect of śamatha in the continuum of the nine aspects of mind abiding. Thus, whatever obtains the śamatha of the inner mind, when one strives greatly for vipaśyanā, those four mental engagements themselves are the aspect of vipaśyanā. What are the four aspects of vipaśyanā? Here, a bhikṣu, like this, relying on the śamatha of the inner mind, analyzes phenomena, thoroughly analyzes, completely understands, and completely examines. How does one analyze? That is, with respect to the objects that purify conduct, the objects of skill, and the objects that purify afflictions, one analyzes by as many as there are. One thoroughly analyzes by the nature of what exists as it is. Endowed with wisdom,

With mental engagement combined with conceptualization, when clinging to characteristics, it is complete conceptualization; when correctly conceptualizing, it is complete examination. Vipassanā also possesses three doors, and it should be known that it is based on six types of detailed classifications. What are the three doors of vipassanā? They are vipassanā that follows only characteristics, that follows complete searching, and that follows individual discrimination of complete searching. Among these, following only characteristics refers to the mental engagement of one who, through the Dharma or instructions that have been heard and grasped, engages the mind with a settled mental engagement, but does not think, does not discriminate, does not measure, and does not approximate discrimination. This is following only characteristics. When one thinks, discriminates, measures, and approximates discrimination, that is following complete searching. When one has thought and investigated, measured and approximated investigation, and then individually discriminates as it has been established, that is following individual discrimination of complete searching. These are the three doors of vipassanā. Among these, what is it to be based on six types of detailed classifications? When completely searching, one completely searches these six bases: meaning, object, characteristic, direction, time, and reasoning. And after completely searching, one also individually discriminates them. Among these, how does one completely search for meaning? Saying, "The meaning of this statement is this," one completely searches for meaning in this way. How does one completely search for objects? There are two types of objects: internal and external. One completely searches for objects in this way. How does one completely search for characteristics? There are two types of characteristics: own-characteristic and general-characteristic. One completely searches for characteristics in this way. How does one completely search for directions? There are two types of directions: the dark side and the white side. The dark side is from the perspective of faults and shortcomings.

The white aspect is through the path of merit and benefit, and in that way, it seeks in all aspects. How does one seek in all times? There are three kinds of time: past, future, and present. For example, in the past, such a thing happened. For example, in the future, such a thing will happen. For example, in the present, such a thing exists now, and in that way, one seeks in all times. How does one seek in all reasons? There are four kinds of reasons: the reason of dependence, the reason of function, the reason of proof, and the reason of nature. Among them, with the reason of dependence, conventional truth is sought from the aspect of conventional truth, ultimate truth is sought from the aspect of ultimate truth, and the basis is sought from the aspect of the basis. With the reason of function, one seeks the functions of all phenomena, this is a phenomenon, this is a function, this is the function of this, and in this way, one seeks completely. With the reason of proof, one seeks the three valid cognitions: reliable scripture, direct perception, and inference. Does this have a reliable scripture or not? Is it directly perceived or not? Is it reasonable by inference or not? In that way, one seeks completely. Among them, with the reason of nature, one believes in the suchness of all phenomena, the nature of appearance, the inconceivable nature, and the abiding nature, without mental engagement, without discrimination, and in that way, one seeks in all reasons. That is focusing on the three doors of insight and the six divisions of the basis. In short, that is the complete summary of all insight. Why are the six divisions of the basis established? It is said: It is for the sake of the three kinds of realization: realization of the meaning of what is said, realization of the limits of things, and realization as it is. Among them, by completely seeking the meaning, one realizes the meaning of what is said. By completely seeking things and completely seeking their own characteristics, one realizes the
