Therefore, whoever enters this path is without fault and joyful. Therefore, repeatedly remembering, focusing on consistency, continuously, the faultless and joyful stream of mind is called meditation. Single-pointedness of mind itself has two aspects: calm abiding and insight. Among them, the nine ways of mind abiding are the aspect of calm abiding. Among them, the four ways of observing with wisdom are the aspect of insight. So, what are the nine ways of mind abiding? Here, a monk makes the mind abide only within, abides truthfully, gathers and abides, abides closely, tames, pacifies, nearly pacifies, becomes one stream, and meditates. So, how does one abide? Truly gathering from all external objects, focusing inward in order not to be distracted. In order not to be distracted, the initial focus is abiding. How does one abide truthfully? The initially focused mind, if it wavers, is coarse, does not abide truthfully, does not abide completely, then by focusing on that object, and by the way one should initially act, with obvious rebuke and so on, making it subtle and not obviously distracted, this is abiding truthfully. How does one gather and abide? Thus, if his mind, after abiding and abiding truthfully, scatters outward due to forgetfulness, then he gathers it back again, thus it is gathering and abiding. How does one abide closely? Just initially, in that way, mindfulness abides closely, abiding and the mind abiding truthfully, from that time on, his mind does not scatter outward, thus it is abiding closely. How does one tame? That is, forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tangible objects, or the characteristics of desire, hatred, and ignorance, as well as the characteristics of women and men, if they cause his mind to be distracted, then let him first hold the perception of faults, and not let his mind be taken away by those characteristics, in this way he can be tamed. How can he be pacified? For any conceptual thoughts such as thoughts of desire, and for any afflictions close to afflictions such as the obscuration of desire, if they completely disturb his mind, then let him first hold the perception of faults, and not let his mind be taken away by those conceptual thoughts and close afflictions. In this way he can be pacified. How can he be nearly pacified? Because of his forgetfulness, both conceptual thoughts and close afflictions arise, and he does not accept and abandons everything that arises, in this way he can be nearly pacified. How can he become one stream? By continuously abiding in the continuum of samadhi with intention and without interruption, in this way he can become one stream. How can he become samadhi? Through the cause of pervasive cultivation, familiarization, and repeated practice, he naturally enters, obtains the path of natural entry and without intention, and through that naturalness, his mind will be able to enter the continuum of samadhi without distraction, in this way he can become samadhi. Among them, the nine states of mind abiding are accomplished by the six powers, namely: the power of hearing, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of vigilance, the power of diligence, and the power of familiarization. Among them, with the power of hearing and thinking, temporarily relying on what is heard and what is thought, only initially making the mind abide in the object of focus, and
