The Śrāvakabhūmi from the Yogācārabhūmi. Asaṅga. The Śrāvakabhūmi from the Yogācārabhūmi. Asaṅga. The Śrāvakabhūmi from the Yogācārabhūmi. Volume 1. Homage to the Three Jewels! The summary verses encompassing all of the Śrāvaka are: Lineage and individuals, definite association and worldly, and supramundane, in short, these are the grounds. Summary: Lineage, entry, and definite emergence, are the three grounds named. If those are summarized, they are called the Śrāvakabhūmi. What is the lineage ground? It is said: Whatever is lineage, and whatever is the establishment of lineage, and whatever are the signs of individuals abiding in lineage, and whatever individuals abide in lineage, all of those gathered together are called the lineage ground. What is lineage? It is said: Whatever is the seed-dharma of an individual abiding in lineage, that is, if it exists and is not non-existent, and if the conditions for individuals abiding in lineage are also found, then it is possible to attain nirvāṇa, and it is able to be touched and has power. What are the different names of that lineage? Seed, element, and nature are the different names. If asked, what is the nature of that lineage like? It is different from the body, encompassed by the six sense bases, attainable by dharma-nature, and has come down through beginningless time, like that. That which has these different names of lineage, seed, element, and nature, that is called lineage. What is the establishment of lineage? Should it be said that lineage is subtle or mature? It is said: It should be said to be subtle. Why? Because if that seed has not produced fruit and the fruit has not been established, then it is therefore called subtle. When the fruit is produced and the fruit is established, then at that time, whatever the seed is and whatever the fruit is, those two are combined, and therefore it is understood that the lineage is mature. So, does the lineage belong to one lineage, or should it be said to belong to many lineages? It is said: One lineage.

It should be said that it belongs to one lineage. Why? It is said that all those dharmas that enter into different characteristics and different entities will each show their own various transmissions and various ways of entering. However, the seed is different from these six sources (six roots), and there is no different characteristic, because it has been transmitted from beginningless time, and the state of these six sources obtained by Dharma nature is only given names and terms such as caste, seed, realm, and nature. Therefore, it is called belonging to the same lineage. Question: If those who abide in the lineage are destined to be completely liberated from suffering, and those who do not abide in the lineage are considered not destined to be completely liberated from suffering, then why are those who are destined to be completely liberated from suffering, from the very beginning, wandering in samsara for a long time, and have not been completely liberated from suffering? Answer: There are four reasons why one is not completely liberated from suffering: being born in an unfavorable place, the fault of negligence, wrong path, and the fault of obstacles. Among them, what is being born in an unfavorable place? Answer: Being born in a place where the four assemblies (bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, upasikas) do not go, where the saints do not go, where the enlightened ones do not go, where the holy men do not go, among the thieves and barbarians of the borderlands, this is called being born in an unfavorable place. What is negligence? Answer: Being born in a place where the four assemblies go, where the saints go, where the enlightened ones go, where the holy men go, being born among non-contemporary thieves and non-barbarians, even if born in a noble caste, possessing perfect enjoyment, but especially greedy for desires and completely enjoying them, not regarding them as faults, and not being able to recognize renunciation well, this is called negligence. What is a wrong path? Answer: For example, even if growing up among the people of the middle lands, but holding heretical views, thinking that there is no giving, etc., and not understanding other existences besides this.
