are empty. There, places without hidden dwellings, cemeteries, and remote areas are called monasteries. There, the edge of the forest is called under a tree. There, mountain retreats, caves, and thatched huts are called empty houses. For example, monasteries, under trees, and empty houses, without hidden dwellings, cemeteries, and remote areas, the edge of the forest, mountain retreats, caves, and thatched huts, these together are recognized as dwellings. The perfection of a dwelling has five aspects. Here, firstly, the dwelling is auspiciously hidden, pleasing to the eye, beautiful, possessing a delightful garden, possessing a lush forest, possessing a pond, clear and pleasant, without noise, not a place of stumps and thorns, not many stones, tiles, and gravel. Whoever sees it, in order to diligently practice, the mind will manifest great joy, the mind feels satisfied and great happiness, thus greatly praising the practice, this is the first perfection of a dwelling. Furthermore, there are few unpleasant things during the day, the night is quiet and less noisy, there are few mosquitoes, long-beaked flies, wind, sunlight, and the touch of scorpions and snakes, this is the second perfection of a dwelling. Furthermore, where there are no fears and terrors of lions, tigers, bears, thieves, enemy armies, humans and non-humans, one can be at ease, without worries, and live in comfort, this is the third perfection of a dwelling. Furthermore, where robes and other necessities of life are easily obtained, and one can effortlessly sustain oneself through begging and other means, this is the fourth perfection of a dwelling. Furthermore, where one is completely taken care of by a virtuous friend, who can reveal what has not been revealed, clarify what has been revealed, and in order to purify wisdom and vision, through wisdom separately analyze profound meanings and words, thus showing it well, like this, equal to Brahma.

Wherever those skilled in practice reside, that is the fifth place of perfect endowment. What is the perfection of conduct? Passing the day with walking and sitting, and doing the same in the first part of the night. In the middle part, lying down on the right side, and in the last part, rising quickly and passing the time with walking and sitting. Thus, in that place of perfect endowment, one sits in the lotus position on a seat, a small seat, or grass spread out, as permitted by the Buddha. Why? Because one truly sees five reasons: if the body is well-composed, this conduct will generate great diligence and is conducive to it. Merely being quick will generate great diligence, and similarly, sitting can pass a long time, and this conduct will not make the body very tired. Similarly, this conduct is uncommon to other non-Buddhists and external adversaries, and similarly, others who see this conduct of sitting will generate great joy. Similarly, this conduct is permitted and taught by the Buddhas and the Buddha's Shravakas. Because one truly sees these five reasons, one sits in the lotus position, straightening the body. What is straightening the body? Placing the body clearly and placing the mind straight without wavering or artifice. Because one is fully controlled by the straight body, one does not allow the mind of dullness and sleep to arise and remain. Because the mind is unwavering and without artifice, one does not allow outward distraction to arise and remain. The meaning of "establishing mindfulness in front" is, what is it to establish mindfulness in front and abide? Right mindfulness and corresponding mindfulness, because it turns away from and is inconsistent with all dark sides, it is called mindfulness in front. Furthermore, mindfulness focused on the characteristics of samadhi and mindfulness focused on the characteristics of images.

Because it is directed towards all objects of meditative stabilization, it is called mindfulness directed, and that is perfect conduct. What is perfect solitude? It is said: There are two kinds: physical solitude and mental solitude. Physical solitude refers to those who live at home, those who are ordained, and those who do not live together. Mental solitude refers to abandoning afflicted and unspecified mental activities, and cultivating mental activities that arise from the union of meditative stabilization or the collection of samādhi, which have the meaning of joy. That is called mental solitude. So, what is perfect place, what is perfect conduct, what is physical solitude, and what is mental solitude? Combining these together is called supreme solitude. So, what is one-pointedness of mind? It is said: Whether it is repeatedly recollecting, or focusing on similar objects, as well as the continuity, faultlessness, and joyful stream of mind, this is also called samādhi, and also called virtuous one-pointedness of mind. So, what makes one repeatedly recollect? It is said: Based on whatever Dharma is held and listened to, and whatever teachings and subsequent instructions are received from the gurus, making the sign of the ground of meditative stabilization manifest, causing the continuous mindfulness to follow and praising it. So, what is focusing on similar objects? Whatever the various, manifold, and diverse objects of meditative stabilization are, by which the mind enters into that object, that is called meditative stabilization, and that is called focusing on similar objects. What is it similar to? It is said: It is called similar because it is an image of knowable things. That object makes mindfulness have the aspect of being undistracted, without interruption, continuous, constant, and respectfully entering, that is having continuity. For that object itself, having joy without affliction, mindfulness abiding in contact
