Just as heat arises from rubbing wood, so too should one observe those warm aspects that precede and become the cause of the arising of undefiled dharmas like fire, which completely burn away afflictions. Just as that heat itself manifestly increases and eventually reaches its peak, so too should one observe the peak. Just as smoke billows forth, so too should one observe the acceptances that accord with truth. Just as when it has extensively and manifestly increased, fire without flames arises, so too should one observe the supreme qualities of worldly dharmas. Just as immediately upon the arising of fire, flames arise, and the flames arise and blaze, thereby performing the function of fire, so too should one observe those undefiled dharmas that transcend the world, which arise in the wake of the five faculties that are completely grasped by the supreme qualities of worldly dharmas. What are these? It is said: the seven branches of enlightenment, namely, the branches of the person who has genuinely and flawlessly entered into suchness, which is the realization of things as they are. That realization of things as they are is also completely encompassed by seven branches, namely, three aspects of quiescence, three aspects of insight, and one aspect of both. Among these, the three—discrimination of dharmas, exertion, and joy—are the aspect of insight. Among these, the three—pliancy, meditative concentration, and equanimity—are the aspect of quiescence. Mindfulness is the aspect of both, and is called all-pervasive. Therefore, in order to obtain the branches of enlightenment, at that time one sees the four trainings. Through this seeing, the afflictions that are to be abandoned by seeing have already been abandoned, but if there remain afflictions that are to be abandoned by cultivation, then in order to abandon these afflictions, one cultivates the three aggregates, namely, the eightfold noble path. Among these, what is right view, what is right thought, and what is right effort—these are the aggregate of wisdom.

Speech and the limits of action, and livelihood, all of which are the aggregates of discipline. Among them, what is right mindfulness, and what is right concentration, that is the aggregate of concentration. Why is it called the Noble Eightfold Path? The answer is: Because the eight branches completely contain the teachings of the noble ones, it is to abandon all the afflictions seen at the time of seeing the path, and to manifest the path of liberation, and this is practice, so it is called the Noble Eightfold Path. Among them, at the time of the branch of enlightenment, the moment of realizing and obtaining that, and how to realize and understand after obtaining it, the combination of these two is called right view. Under the influence of right view, correctly thinking about thoughts of renunciation, thoughts of harmlessness, and thoughts of non-harming, that is right thought. If the mind temporarily engages in various thoughts, then one will think about such thoughts. If the mind engages in speech, then under that influence, speaking words that conform to the Dharma with virtuous thoughts, that is its right speech. If one desires robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and utensils, and seeks them, and maintains mindfulness while walking and returning, slightly looking, carefully looking, contracting, stretching, wearing monastic robes, Dharma robes, holding a bowl, eating, drinking, chewing, tasting, studying scriptures, or seeking Dharma robes, etc., or walking, standing, sitting, lying down, until clearing away the drowsiness of sleep, all maintain mindfulness, that is its right action boundary. Seeking robes, medicine, and utensils, etc., with the Dharma, and wrong

Whatever is the cessation of those things that lead to wrong livelihood, that is called his right livelihood. That which is included in rightness by abandonment, right purity, the limit of action, and whatever livelihood there is, that is, when he first obtains uncontaminated attention, he obtains the limbs of enlightenment together with it alone, those are called the Noble's Delightful Morality. Why is that? Like this, that is what the noble, excellent, and perfectly gone ones must obtain, restrained from doing what is harmed by one's own purity, what is wrongly practiced by the body, and wrong livelihood, from a long time they have delighted in, loved, pitied, and been pleased with. Because they have delighted in, loved, pitied, and been pleased with it for a long time, they obtain it at that time, therefore it is called the Noble's Delight. Like this, if the Noble's Delightful Morality is obtained, one will not knowingly speak false words, one will not intentionally kill the lives of sentient beings, one will not take what is not given, one will not engage in sexual misconduct out of desire, and one will not seek robes and so forth by means of non- Dharma. Therefore, relying on those very Noble's Delightful Moralities, when one cultivates the path, whatever is the entry of speech, whatever is the action of the body, and whatever is the livelihood, those are also called right purity, the limit of action, and livelihood. Relying on right view, right thought, right speech, the limit of action, and livelihood, the aspiration, diligence, effort, determination to renounce, overcoming others, power, exertion, the mind correctly and completely holding, and constant perseverance of the one who has entered into cultivation, that is called his right effort. Like this, possessing right effort, relying on the four mindfulnesses, the mindfulness that is correctly included by non-perversion, whatever correctly holds the nine ways of abiding in the mind, those are called his right mindfulness and right concentration.
