Sana. Cutting off latent tendencies and knowing, that is, attending to what is hidden from the object, and placing equanimity on what is not hidden from the object, these are the eight acts of abandonment. These eight acts of abandonment are the practice of truly destroying latent tendencies, in which desire is only desire. Whatever effort is made is diligence. Whatever faith there is is also only faith. Whatever is thoroughly practiced, and whatever is mindfulness, and whatever is vigilance, and whatever is mind, and whatever is equanimity, is the means. Whatever previous samadhi of desire and so on, and whatever these acts of abandonment, all of them are gathered together, abandoning latent tendencies and perfecting samadhi, it is called the miraculous foot of desire samadhi endowed with the act of abandonment, as well as diligence, as well as mind, as well as the samadhi of investigation endowed with the act of abandonment. Why is it called the miraculous foot? It is said: For example, just as one who has feet can walk, return, and overcome others, so too, one who has these dharmas and also has these samadhis completely perfected, and thus the mind is completely purified, completely cleansed, without afflictions, free from near afflictions, upright, abiding in fitness, and having attained immovability, in order to attain and know the supramundane dharmas, one can walk, return, and overcome others, just as these supramundane dharmas are supreme miracles and supreme wealth, therefore it is called the miraculous foot. Thus, one who abides in samadhi abides in samadhi, and relying on samadhi, one practices the higher training in mind and the higher training in wisdom. When one practices this, one has manifest faith, great joy, and whatever faith there is in the realization of the teacher and other hearers.

Therefore, it is called the power of faith because of the meaning of being able to be independent. What is it independent of? It is said that it is independent of the arising of transcendental Dharma, as well as the arising of diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, wisdom, and so on. Which are diligence and so on? Those are also independent of the arising of transcendental Dharma and higher Dharma, and are independent in the process of accomplishment. Until wisdom, it is independent of the arising of transcendental Dharma, therefore, those such as faith are the five roots. Knowing the difference between the former and the latter, and following it, in order to realize the transcendental Dharma before it. Whether it is manifest faith, great joy, or faith, it is called the power of faith because of the meaning of being indestructible. What cannot be destroyed? It is said that faith is not a god, not a demon, not Brahma, nor anyone, in the world, it is not taken away because it is in accordance with the Dharma, and it is not taken away by the pervasive bondage of afflictions, therefore, it is called indestructible. Diligence and so on, which are led by it and placed in front, are also called powers, and with those powers, they become powerful, thus completely overcoming all the powers of the demons, and striving to exhaust all the outflows, therefore, they are called powers. Therefore, one should know what the root of faith is and what the power of faith is, and one should observe the four kinds of faith. Why? Knowing that one has entered correctly and without error, whatever faith there is, those are, born from its cause, born from its condition, born from its basis, therefore, because of the causal relationship, those are considered to be the fruit of its owner, and the Blessed One also said that one should observe those, but not the nature of those and the characteristics of those. Therefore, the root of diligence should be observed as the four right abandonments, what are the four right abandonments? Abandoning the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing.

Therefore, whatever correct abandonment arises from practice, those are considered here as the correct abandonments. Like this, they enter in order to permanently abandon sinful and unwholesome dharmas. Among them, the faculty of mindfulness should be regarded as the four mindfulnesses, as it is said, that which enters in order to abandon all inversions is the four mindfulnesses. Among them, the faculty of concentration should be regarded as the four dhyanas, as it is said, which refers to the dhyanas arising from the practice of the non-returner. Among them, the faculty of wisdom should be regarded as the four truths, as it is said, which refers to knowing the truth, entering in order to realize the four noble truths and attain the fruit of a renunciate. Just as the faculties are, so too should the powers be understood. Those faculties and those powers should be constantly cultivated and habituated, and through repeated cultivation, they generate the four roots of virtue that are in accordance with the decisive aspect, namely, the warmth, the peak, the forbearance that is in accordance with the truth, and the supreme of worldly dharmas, small, medium, and great. For example, a person who wants to do the work of fire with fire and seeks fire, rubs a rubbing stick on a flint, conspicuously rubs and strives, tightens, and exerts effort. Through his effort, tightening, and exertion, warmth will first arise from the flint. When that warmth itself conspicuously increases, the peak arises, and smoke billows. When it extensively and conspicuously increases, fire without flame will arise. As soon as fire arises, flame will arise, and the flame arises and burns, thereby doing the work of fire. Similarly, just as one conspicuously rubs and strives, tightens, and exerts effort, so it should be seen that the five faculties are constantly cultivated and habituated, and repeatedly cultivated. Just as and
