Whatever is in between. What is the attention that engages without effort? It is the attention to the result of ultimate yoga. Furthermore, there are four types of attention: arising from conformity, arising from opposition, worthy of faith, and worthy of individual examination. Among these, attention arising from conformity is that which refutes the object of focus and also initiates correct yoga, but does not abandon afflictions. Among these, attention arising from opposition is that which abandons afflictions. Among these, attention worthy of faith is that which makes the mind, which is disheartened by the characteristics that cause complete grasping, manifestly and completely rejoice, correctly and completely rejoice, and completely grasp. Among these, attention worthy of individual examination is, for example, the attention of investigation, by which one individually distinguishes between afflictions that have been abandoned and those that have not been abandoned. So, with the object of focus as the attention, how many aspects should be attended to? It is said: four. What are the four? They are: the aspect of the object of focus, the aspect of the basis, the aspect of what should be completely abandoned, and the aspect of what should be individually shown. Among these, the aspect of the object of focus is the image and appearance that are in accordance with the object of knowledge. Now, the aspect of the basis is, for example, the accumulation of the aggregates of samadhi, the sutras that are in accordance, the strong desire to have practice, aversion to the things that should be loathed, and directing the mind to the complete knowledge of distraction and non-distraction, and being moved from elsewhere, not made by humans, not made by non-humans, not made by sound, and not made by diligence. Similarly, the mind is manifestly gathered inward, proceeding before vipashyana, which is the basis aspect for later vipashyana to become clear. Similarly, vipashyana proceeding before shamatha is the basis aspect for later shamatha to become clear. Among these, there are four aspects of what should be completely abandoned, namely: the aspect of sinking and the aspect of excitement.

of signs, the sign of attachment, and the sign of distraction. Among these, the sign of sinking is the sign of the object and the basis, by which the mind becomes sinking. Among these, the sign of agitation is the sign of the object and the basis, by which the mind becomes agitated. Among these, the sign of attachment is the sign of the object and the basis, by which the mind becomes attached to the object, completely attached and completely afflicted. Among these, the sign of distraction is the sign of the object and the basis, by which the mind becomes outwardly distracted. These signs should be understood as explained in the grounds of meditative stabilization. If these mental activities cause faith in the object, how many kinds of faith are there? It is said: There are nine kinds of faith. What are the nine? They are: luminous and non-luminous, dull and sharp, small and great, immeasurable, completely pure and not completely pure. Among these, faith in luminosity is that which is associated with appearance when the sign of appearance is well grasped. Among these, faith in non-luminosity is like this: when the sign of appearance is grasped, it is that which is associated with darkness. Among these, faith in dullness is that which belongs to the lineage of dull faculties. Among these, faith in sharpness is that which belongs to the lineage of sharp faculties. Among these, faith in smallness is that which is associated with small faith and aspiration, and the object is small. Therefore, because the mental activity is small and the object is small, it is small faith. Among these, faith in greatness is that which is associated with great faith and aspiration, and the faith of faith is black in the object that has become great. Therefore, because the mental activity has become great and the object has become great, it is great faith. Among these, faith in immeasurability is that which is associated with immeasurable faith and aspiration, and the faith of faith is that which is believed in the infinite and boundless object. Therefore, because the mental activity is immeasurable and the object is immeasurable, it is immeasurable faith. Among these, faith in complete purity is that which is well cultivated and completely accomplished.
