Therefore, yoga is kept secret. Why? Because if those who hold the Sutras, the Vinaya, and the Matrikas hear of the state of yoga, and thereby enter into the Sutras, they will not truly enter; if they correctly view the Vinaya, it will not truly appear; if they understand through the nature of reality, it will contradict the nature of reality. Therefore, those foundations will become displeased, they will urge me with displeasing words, and they will cause disputes. In that way, I will not be honored by kings, great ministers, the wealthy, merchants, and leaders, nor will I be regarded as a lama, and I will not obtain robes, alms, bedding, cushions, medicine for sickness, and supplies. They will think, 'This is not good.' Therefore, driven by the desire for gain and respect, even though they know it is not Dharma, they still change their perceptions and desires, and teach non-Dharma as Dharma, thinking they are teaching correctly. Those who practice in accordance with their views are those who perceive non-Dharma as Dharma. Because they are inferior and ignorant, they perceive non-Dharma as Dharma. Therefore, even if they practice as they are told, it should be known that it is only wrong practice. Such a decline of yoga caused by wrong practice is for the sake of destroying the sacred Dharma; it is only disguised as the sacred Dharma, but it is not the true sacred Dharma. Therefore, as a contemplative monk, a practitioner of yoga should fully understand and completely abandon these four declines of yoga. What are the yogas? It is said: There are four yogas: faith, desire, diligence, and method. Among these, faith has two aspects and two bases: the aspect of complete conviction and the aspect of complete joy; and the basis of discriminating Dharma and reason, and the basis of believing in the power of the individual. Desire also has four aspects, namely:

The intention for attainment is like this: here, to generate joy in the higher liberation, as previously explained in detail. The intention for complete inquiry is like this: here, in order to hear what has not been heard, and in order to purify what has been heard, to generate joy in going to the presence of those who practice the same as Brahma in the pleasure garden, the learned, the yogis, and the wise. The intention for correctly accomplishing the assembly is like this: here, in order to completely purify the vows of morality, to be aware of the measure of food, and to strive after not sleeping, and to practice with mindfulness, to generate joy from higher to higher. The intention for striving afterwards is like this: here, to always practice, and to practice with respect, and to generate joy in meditating on the path, and wanting and wanting to do. Thus, there are also four types of intention: namely, the intention for attainment, for complete inquiry, for correctly accomplishing the assembly, and for striving afterwards. There are also four types of diligence: namely, diligence for listening, for thinking, for meditating, and for completely purifying obscurations. Among them, diligence for listening is when one listens to what has not been heard and completely purifies what has been heard, the mind is delighted and does not abandon practice, that is diligence. Among them, diligence for thinking is when one goes alone to a secluded place to contemplate the meaning of the teachings that have been heard, the mind is attentive, measuring, and closely examining it, the mind is delighted and does not abandon practice, that is diligence. Among them, diligence for meditating is when one enters into correct abiding within, and meditates on shamatha and vipassana from time to time, the mind is delighted and does not abandon practice, that is diligence. Among them, diligence for completely purifying obscurations is when one strives day and night, and when the mind is completely subdued from the things that become obscurations through walking and sitting, the mind is delighted and does not abandon practice, that is diligence. Among them, there are also four types of means, namely,

Based on the discipline of morality and the restraint of the senses, one should establish mindfulness very closely. Having established mindfulness in this way, one should diligently protect the mind at all times and rely on virtuous dharmas. Having become diligent in this way, one should engage in calming the mind internally and discriminating the dharmas of higher wisdom. These four yogas also have sixteen aspects. Among them, with faith, one generates genuine conviction in the meaning to be attained. Because of generating genuine conviction in what is to be attained, one generates the desire to engage in virtuous dharmas. Having the desire to act in this way, one dwells diligently day and night, with joy, and firmly suppresses others. If diligence is skillfully grasped by means, then one engages in order to attain what has not been attained, to understand what has not been understood, and to manifest what has not been manifested. Therefore, these four dharmas are called yoga. What is attention? There are four kinds of attention. What are the four? They are: namely, entering with effort, entering intermittently, entering without interruption, and entering without exertion. What is attention that enters with effort? It is like this: a beginner only abides in the mind, or abides correctly, or discriminates dharmas. If attention has not been attained, then one strives to enter into that attention, relies on effort, and abides in one-pointedness of mind. Therefore, it is called entering with effort. What is attention that enters intermittently? After obtaining attention, when proceeding on the worldly and transmundane paths, it is the attention that individually knows the characteristics. It is like this: in that attention, one thinks and mixes samadhi, but does not enter into oneness in the manner of cultivation. What is attention that enters without interruption? After the attention that individually knows the characteristics, it is the attention of ultimate yoga.
