I, it is only for the sake of thorough understanding, this is called complete purification through counting. Complete purification through counting is also taught to those with dull faculties, because it is a place where their minds can abide and their minds can find great joy without being distracted. Otherwise, without counting, their minds would become dull, or be overcome by sleep, or their minds would wander outwards, so those who strive to count will not experience this. Those who are sharp-witted and clear-minded do not enjoy and engage in the practice of counting, because the practice of counting itself, like being struck by lightning, will quickly understand, and therefore will not bring great joy. They focus their mindfulness on the object of inhalation and exhalation, and remember and understand all where it enters, how much it enters, how it enters, and when it enters. Such is their practice. By constantly relying on and becoming accustomed to this practice, and practicing it many times, the body becomes thoroughly purified, and the mind also becomes thoroughly purified, and one will also touch upon single-pointedness, and will also attain great joy in the object. Thus, the complete purification of the body is accomplished, and by contemplating the objects of what is grasped and what grasps, one enters into the aggregates. How does one enter? When one contemplates the body that is the basis of inhalation and exhalation, one enters into the aggregate of form. For inhalation and exhalation, the feeling and experience that is accompanied by the grasping mindfulness there, that is the aggregate of feeling. That which completely knows everything, that is the aggregate of perception. That which remembers, that which thinks, and the wisdom therein, that is the aggregate of formations. That which is mind, intellect, and consciousness, that is the aggregate of consciousness. Thus, the aggregates

Having entered into these, dwelling in them repeatedly, that is called complete purification by entering into the aggregates. When he sees and fully understands only the aggregates, only the formations, and only the objects, at that time, he enters into the dependent arising of those very formations. How does he enter? In that way, he seeks and fully investigates, what is the basis of these inhalations and exhalations? What is the cause? He thinks to himself, these inhalations and exhalations rely on the body and the body is the cause, rely on the mind and the mind is the cause. And he thinks, what is the cause of body and mind? The cause of body and mind is the life force. He enters in this way. What is the cause of the life force? The cause of the life force is previous formations. He enters in this way. What is the cause of previous formations? The cause of previous formations is ignorance. He enters in this way. Therefore, with ignorance as the cause, previous formations arise; with previous formations as the cause, the life force arises; with the life force as the cause, body and mind arise; with body and mind as the cause, inhalations and exhalations arise. Therefore, when ignorance ceases, formations cease. When formations cease, the life force ceases. When the life force ceases, body and mind cease. When body and mind cease, inhalations and exhalations cease. He thinks in this way, and thus he enters into dependent arising. Because he dwells in this repeatedly, it is called complete purification by entering into dependent arising. This is called complete purification by entering into dependent arising. Hearer, ninth fascicle. Having thus completely purified through dependent arising, those formations that arise dependently are impermanent. Because of impermanence, they arise from what was previously unarisen, and having arisen, they will also perish. Those that arise from what was previously unarisen, and having arisen, also

Those changes are of the nature of birth, of the nature of aging, of the nature of sickness, and of the nature of death. Those that are of the nature of birth, aging, sickness, and death are suffering. Those that are suffering are selfless, without autonomy, and separated from a master, thus one enters (understanding). Thus, with the aspects of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, one enters the truth of suffering. He thinks thus: Whatever suffering, disease, and fruition are caused by actions, whatever is slightly manifested, all of that arises from the cause of existence, therefore, completely abandoning that which arises from craving that produces suffering, that is peace, that is excellent. If I know thus, see thus, and abide thus many times, then craving will be completely exhausted. He thinks thus, thus, he enters the truth of origination, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. When he abides in this many times and realizes the truths, that is called complete purification by entering the truth. Thus, through the complete purification of the truths, when the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing are abandoned, in order to abandon those to be abandoned by meditation, one completely purifies with sixteen aspects. What are the sixteen aspects? Namely: When mindfully inhaling, one learns to think mindfully inhaling; when mindfully exhaling, one learns to think mindfully exhaling; when breathing long and short, when experiencing all of the body and inhaling, one learns to think experiencing all of the body and inhaling; when breathing long and short, when experiencing all of the body and exhaling, one learns to think experiencing all of the body and exhaling; having thoroughly subdued the bodily activities, when inhaling, one learns to think inhaling after thoroughly subduing the bodily activities.
