It should be known that there are five complete trainings for breathing. What are the five? They are: complete training through counting, complete training through entering the aggregates, complete training through entering dependent origination, complete training through entering the truths, and complete training through the sixteen aspects. So, what is complete training through counting? Complete training through counting has four ways. In short, these four ways are as follows: counting one by one, counting in pairs, counting sequentially, and counting non-sequentially. So, what is counting one by one? With mindfulness focused on breathing in and breathing out, when inhaling, one counts "one"; when the inhalation stops and the exhalation begins, one counts "two." The numbers counted in this way should be neither too few nor too many, counting up to ten. This is called counting one by one. So, what is counting in pairs? When the inhalation stops and the exhalation begins, one counts "one," and counts up to ten in this way. This is called counting in pairs, because inhaling and exhaling are combined and counted as "one," hence it is called counting in pairs. So, what is counting sequentially? Counting from one to ten in numerical order through counting one by one or counting in pairs, this is called counting sequentially. So, what is counting non-sequentially? Starting from ten, counting backwards to nine, eight, six, five, one, not counting in numerical order, this is called counting non-sequentially. When relying on counting one by one or counting in pairs, thereby completely training in counting sequentially and counting non-sequentially, during that time his mind is not distracted, and there is no mental distraction.

When counting with it, one should explain the difference of the previous counting. What is the difference of counting for it? Is it counting one by one, or counting in pairs, that is, counting by combining two into one. Among them, counting in pairs, that is, counting by combining two into one, then the four of inhalation and exhalation become one. If counting one by one, that is, counting by combining two into one, then the two of inhalation and exhalation become one, and count to ten in this way. Thus, increasing from above, even up to a hundred is combined into one for counting, and with the counting of one hundred combined into one, gradually count to ten as well. Thus, diligently counting, combining ten by ten into one for counting, when the ten are complete, with the counting of ten combined into one, if his mind does not become distracted during that time, then just that is enough to consider that he has been completely purified through counting. If, when diligently counting, his mind becomes distracted during that time, then at this time it is necessary to start again from the beginning, starting from the very beginning of conforming or not conforming, and begin counting. When the counting is completely purified, his mind focuses only on himself, not entering the path of external objects, and the object of inhalation and exhalation continues immediately without interruption, and when inhaling, he also knows that he is inhaling, and when exhaling, he also knows that he is exhaling, knowing the state of emptiness when exhaling, and when exhaling, he also knows that he is exhaling, and when exhaling stops, he also knows that exhaling stops, knowing the state of emptiness when inhaling, unmoving and unchanging, without the appearance of distraction, and proceeding with great joy, then just that is enough to consider that he has completely transcended the stage of counting, therefore there is no need to count again, just focus on the object of inhalation and exhalation. Between inhalation and exhalation, one should be aware of the state of entering and stopping of exhalation and inhalation.
