When contemplating decay and being devoured, one purifies the mind from attachment to colors. When contemplating blood and flesh, one purifies the mind from attachment to shapes. When contemplating a pile of bones, a skeleton, and bones, one tames the mind from attachment to touch. When contemplating being scattered in all directions, one purifies the mind from attachment to intimacy. Therefore, one purifies the mind from attachment to sexual desire. Therefore, the Blessed One also said: 'The impurity and ugliness that rely on external objects can be divided into four kinds of cemeteries. If he sees a tomb where the dead have been dead for one day, two days, three days, or seven days, and have been devoured by crows, hawks, vultures, dogs, and foxes, he will think: My body will also become like this, becoming like this, not transcending this natural law.' He said that combining these with the body shows the state between decay and being devoured. He said, 'If he does not see a tomb where there is no cracked skin, flesh, blood, and nourishment of tendons,' this indicates the state of blood and flesh. He said, 'If he sees the bones in the tomb,' this indicates the state of a pile of bones, a skeleton, and bones. He said, 'If he sees hand bones scattered everywhere, foot bones scattered everywhere, ankle bones scattered everywhere, knee bones scattered everywhere, ribs, scapula, arm bones, vertebrae, jawbones, teeth, and skulls also scattered in various places in the tomb, and similarly, seeing bones that have been there for one year, two years, three years, or seven years, white like conch shells, or like the color of pigeons, mixed with dust,' this indicates the state of being scattered in all directions. Therefore, relying on external objects

By focusing on the unattractiveness of impurity, the mind is purified from sexual desire. By focusing on the unattractiveness of suffering, and by focusing on the unattractiveness of evil, the mind is purified from desire for objects and sexual desire for objects. By focusing on the unattractiveness of dependence, the mind is liberated from desire for form and sexual desire for form. By focusing on the unattractiveness of afflictions, and by focusing on the unattractiveness of extreme destruction, the mind is purified from the desire for destructible aggregates below the peak of existence and the sexual desire for destructible aggregates. This is a temporary focus for purifying the practice of sexual desire. It is said that the focus on unattractiveness encompasses all aspects of all existences, but this is merely a statement. In reality, here it refers to the unattractiveness of impurity. It should be understood that other unattractivenesses are also the focus for purifying other practices. What is loving-kindness? It is the thought of benefiting others, placing them equally—friends, enemies, and neutrals—and the intention to accomplish small, medium, and great happiness. Among them, friends, enemies, and neutrals are the objects. The thought of benefiting others by placing them equally, and the intention to accomplish happiness, are the subjects. Thus, the object and the subject combined are called loving-kindness. What is meant by having a loving mind is that it temporarily shows the superior intention of benefiting the three sides: friends, enemies, and neutrals. What is meant by being without partiality, without opposition, and without harm is that it shows the three characteristics of the superior intention of benefiting. Among them, being without partiality is the superior intention of benefiting, and the next two words, "without opposition" and "without harm," then...

These are explained by those actions. Among them, by the meaning of not abiding in the reality of surpassing joy, it is unsurpassed. By the meaning of not having the aspect of harming, it is harmless. What is said as vast and great, and immeasurable, refers to the conduct in the desire realm, as well as the first and second dhyana grounds, and the happiness of the third dhyana ground, showing the small, medium, and large of near attainment. What is said as believing and pervading, cultivating and abiding, indicates belief for the sake of near attainment of happiness in the ground of equipoise. And that near attainment of happiness is also completely encompassed by the superior intention of benefiting, and possesses belief and attention, and it should be understood that one desires happiness for the neutral friends, enemies, and ordinary people who are neither suffering nor happy. Among the suffering and happy friends, enemies, and ordinary people, whoever is suffering is the object of compassion. Whoever is happy is the object of joy, which is called 'thought.' If someone cultivates malice and cultivates loving-kindness towards sentient beings, then malice will become thin, and the mind will be purified from cultivating malice. Among these, what is dependent origination based on this very nature? In the three times, it is like this: merely actions with the reason of dependence, the reason of action, the reason of establishment, and the reason of the nature of phenomena, merely phenomena, merely things, merely causes, merely results, that is, merely phenomena lead phenomena, but there is no doer or feeler, this is called the object of dependent origination based on this very nature. If someone cultivates ignorance and focuses on the object of increasing ignorance, then ignorance will become stronger, and the mind will be purified from cultivating ignorance. Among these, what is the distinction of elements? They are the six elements.
