It is an object that possesses the nature of fruit. From the Hearers: Volume Eight. It is said that the Blessed One, beginning with the venerable Namdru, spoke thus. The venerable Namdru asked the Blessed One: Venerable one, how many objects should a monastic yogi focus on? On which object should one focus? How should one focus on an object in order to focus well? The Blessed One replied: Namdru, well done, well done! Namdru, it is good that you have thought to ask this question. Therefore, listen well and pay attention, and I will explain it. Namdru, for a monastic yogi who desires to be purified, to be wise, or to be liberated from the defilements, one should focus on the appropriate object and the image object, and truly focus on them. That is a constant meditator. So, how does one focus on the appropriate object? Namdru, if a monastic yogi only practices attachment, then one should focus on the unattractive object. If one practices hatred, then one should focus on loving-kindness. If one practices delusion, then one should focus on dependent origination itself. If one practices pride, then one should focus on the division of elements. In this way, one focuses on the appropriate object. Namdru, if a monastic yogi only practices discrimination, then one should focus on the mindfulness of inhaling and exhaling. In this way, one focuses on the appropriate object. Namdru, if a monastic yogi is completely ignorant of the self-characteristics of all phenomena, or of self, sentient beings, life, beings, nurturers, and whatever

If one is completely ignorant of contaminated things, then one should cultivate closeness to those who are skilled in the aggregates. If one is completely ignorant of causes, then one should cultivate closeness to those who are skilled in the elements. If one is completely ignorant of conditions, then one should cultivate closeness to those who are skilled in the sense bases. If one is completely ignorant of impermanence, suffering, and selflessness, then one should cultivate closeness to those who are skilled in dependent origination and those who are skilled in what is and is not the proper place. If one desires to be free from attachment to the desire realm, then one should cultivate closeness to the coarseness of desires and the peacefulness of forms. If one desires to be free from attachment to forms, then one should cultivate closeness to the coarseness of forms and the peacefulness of formless realms. If one desires to be saved from all aggregates of destruction and desires liberation, then one should cultivate closeness to the truth of suffering, the truth of the origin, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. In this way, a monastic yogi practitioner cultivates closeness to an object of focus that is in accordance with yogic practice. How does a monastic yogi practitioner cultivate closeness to an object of focus that is an image for yogic practice? In this way, a monastic yogi practitioner, a practitioner of yoga, desires to distinguish, to thoroughly distinguish, to completely understand, and to completely examine each and every knowable thing. If he has seen, heard, distinguished, or even cognized those things from the very beginning, then relying on that which is seen, heard, distinguished, or cognized, he applies his mind with the mental activity of meditative stabilization, and he discriminates and believes. Although he does not see the knowable thing itself, which has become close and manifest, nevertheless, concerning it, there will arise its image, its illusion, merely wisdom, merely seeing, merely recollection. The monastic yogi practitioner, the practitioner of yoga, at that time, with a mind that is in accordance with that object of focus, makes it completely peaceful.

And, from time to time, he also practices yoga for the sake of distinguishing the Dharma with superior wisdom. Namaja, thus, a Bhikṣu Yogin, a practitioner of yoga, is one who directs his mind towards the object of an image. Namaja, how does a Bhikṣu Yogin, a practitioner of yoga, direct his mind truly towards the object? Namaja, if a Bhikṣu Yogin, a practitioner of yoga, directs his mind towards the object, then he knows as much as he should know, and he knows it as it is, without being inverted, then, Namaja, thus, that Bhikṣu Yogin, a practitioner of yoga, is one who directs his mind truly towards the object. Namaja, how is a Bhikṣu Yogin, a practitioner of yoga, a constantly diligent meditator? Namaja, if a Bhikṣu Yogin, a practitioner of yoga, directs his mind towards the object in that way, then he constantly applies himself and acts with reverence, and he applies himself, and from time to time he meditates on the characteristics of Śamatha, and the characteristics of conceptualization, and the characteristics of equanimity are fully shown and practiced, and because of the cause of having practiced many times, all the bad states are thoroughly subdued, therefore, he touches the attainment of a completely pure state. He makes it manifest, and because the object of knowledge has become manifest, the object is completely purified, and because he is free from attachment, the mind is completely purified, and because he is free from ignorance, the wisdom is completely purified, he realizes, touches, and makes it manifest, then, Namaja, thus, that Bhikṣu Yogin, a practitioner of yoga, is a constantly diligent meditator. Namaja, for what reason does a Bhikṣu Yogin, a practitioner of yoga, direct his mind towards that very object, and if he directs his mind towards the object in that way, then, in that way, his mind is well directed towards the object, so it is said. Therein, The Yogin who practices with signs, Understands the meaning truly in all ways, The constantly diligent meditator on images, Realizes complete purity. This verse is also there, and here is a brief explanation of it.
