What is the image with conceptualization? For example, here someone hears the holy Dharma, or relies on instruction and subsequent guidance, through seeing, hearing, distinguishing, or fully examining, grasping closely, with the image that corresponds to the object to be known, with the aspects of higher seeing of the meditative ground, they observe, and they differentiate, they thoroughly differentiate, they fully comprehend, they fully scrutinize. What is the object to be known? For example, impurity, love, or just this dependent arising by conditions, or the distinction of elements, or mindfulness of inhaling, or mindfulness of exhaling, or being skilled in aggregates, or being skilled in elements, or being skilled in sources, or being skilled in dependent arising, or being skilled in what is and is not the case, or the coarseness of the lower grounds, or the peace of the higher grounds, or the truth of suffering, or the truth of origin, or the truth of cessation, or the truth of the path. That is called the object to be known. Relying on the instruction and subsequent guidance of that object to be known, or hearing the holy Dharma, and relying on that, manifesting the mental activity of the meditative ground, thereby generating faith in those very dharmas, and generating faith in that very object to be known. At that time, faith similar to direct perception will arise in the object to be known, but the object to be known does not become directly perceived and encountered, or become directly perceived. Although it is not like other similar substances, it is nevertheless the power of faith, because of the power of the mental activity of the meditative ground, it is like that. Because it appears similar to those objects to be known, therefore it is called the image that corresponds to the object to be known. When that yogi, in examining the nature of the object to be examined, correctly comprehends, definitely comprehending the qualities and faults, that is called the image with conceptualization. What is the image without conceptualization? This refers to the yogi grasping the sign of the image, and then...

Not observing, not distinguishing, not extremely distinguishing, not universally calculating, not universally examining, but without abandoning that object of focus, that mind is truly pacified with the aspect of abiding in peace. This is like this: with nine aspects of abiding the mind, one places the mind only within, one abides correctly, one gathers and abides, one abides closely, one tames, one pacifies, one closely pacifies, one makes it a single stream, and one enters into samadhi. At that time, because of non-conceptualization, one does not focus on that image, but on that object of focus, one directs one's mindfulness exclusively to one point. One does not observe, one does not distinguish, one does not extremely distinguish, one does not universally calculate, one does not universally examine. That image is also called an image, and also a sign of samadhi, an object of samadhi, a means of samadhi, a door of samadhi, a support for attention, a body of internal conceptualization, and also called an appearance. One should know that these are different names for the image that corresponds to the object of knowledge. What is the limit of things? It is whatever is the suchness of the object of focus and the as-it-is-ness. What is the suchness among them? It is that from then on, the aggregates of form, the aggregates of feeling, the aggregates of perception, the aggregates of formation, and the aggregates of consciousness, saying that there are none, gathering all conditioned things with the five dharmas, and gathering all dharmas with the elements and the sources, and gathering all knowable things with the noble truths, that is called suchness. What is the as-it-is-ness among them? It is the truth of the object of focus, and the suchness, these four kinds of reasoning, like this: the reasoning of dependence, the reasoning of function, the reasoning of establishing validity, and the reasoning of the nature of phenomena, whatever is in accordance with reasoning. Thus, whatever is the suchness of the object of focus

, and the very nature of being as it is, whatever uniquely gathers these together is called the limit of things. What is the complete accomplishment of purpose? It is that the yogi's calm abiding and the mental activity focused on the image of insight, completely relied upon and habituated, becomes completely perfected through repeated habituation. When that is completely perfected, all the bad migrations are extremely unpurified, turning into purity, and having turned into purity, one completely transcends the image and enters the first dhyana, the realm of the first dhyana having attained the first dhyana, or enters the second dhyana, and the third dhyana, and the fourth dhyana, the realm of the fourth dhyana having attained the fourth dhyana, or enters the sphere of infinite space, and the sphere of infinite consciousness, and the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, having attained that, the knowable object of that realm itself, the non-conceptual wisdom and direct vision arise, that is called the complete accomplishment of purpose. Those four objects of focus go everywhere, following all objects of focus, because they are taught by the truly complete and perfect Buddhas who have appeared in the past, future, and present, therefore they are called pervasive objects of focus. Furthermore, they are the aspect of calm abiding, and the aspect of insight, and the object of focus that possesses all things, and possesses true things, and possesses the things of cause and effect, therefore they are also called pervasive objects of focus, among which the image with conceptualization that is temporarily spoken of here is the object of focus of the aspect of insight. The image without conceptualization that is spoken of here is the object of focus of the aspect of calm abiding. The limit of things that is spoken of here is the object of focus that possesses all things and possesses true things. The complete accomplishment of purpose that is spoken of here is the cause and
