Those who dwell in cemeteries, those who dwell under trees, and those who dwell as they are, these also, starting from alms, Dharma robes, and dwelling places, become twelve or thirteen qualities of asceticism. Among these, there are two types of alms-gathering when distinguished from alms: the alms-gatherer who is content with what is obtained, and the alms-gatherer who begs in sequence. Among these, what is the alms-gatherer who is content with what is obtained? It is like this: eating whatever is obtained and whatever is found from familiar households. What is the alms-gatherer who begs in sequence? In each household, begging from house to house in sequence, eating whatever alms are obtained and whatever is possessed, without thinking, 'How wonderful will the food and drink I obtain from here become,' and thus elevating oneself, not going to each household. Among these, starting from not distinguishing alms themselves, it will become twelve qualities of asceticism. If starting from distinguishing, then it is thirteen. Among these, what is the one-seat practitioner? Sitting on one seat, eating as much as one should eat, not standing up from that seat and eating again, that is called the one-seat practitioner. What is the one who does not take food later? Sitting down for food, as long as one has not obtained all the food that one knows will sustain oneself, one does not eat, and knowing that one will not take more than what is needed for one's food, after that, taking it all and starting to eat, that is how one does not take food later. How is one a three-robe practitioner? Sustaining oneself with the three Dharma robes, namely the sanghati, uttarasanga, and antarvasa, not holding other robes beyond the three Dharma robes, that is how one is a three-robe practitioner. How is one a felt-robe practitioner? All the three Dharma robes or any slightly extra robes that one holds, one only holds those made of wool, and not others, that is how one is a felt-robe practitioner. How is one a rag-robe practitioner? The robes that others have discarded on the main road, street, crossroads, three-way intersection, roadside, bend in the road, or abandoned and discarded, touched by feces, touched by urine, feces, urine, and pus

And whatever is touched by blood and saliva, discard whatever is impure from it, take a rag, wash and sew it, change its color and hold it, thus one is a wearer of patched robes. How is one a dweller in solitude? Dwelling in solitary places such as monasteries, forest edges, and borderlands, away from towns and villages, thus one is a dweller in solitude. How is one a dweller at the foot of a tree? Dwelling at the foot of a tree and relying on the tree, thus one is a dweller at the foot of a tree. How is one unshielded? Not dwelling in covered or shielded places, but dwelling in unshielded places, thus one is unshielded. How is one a dweller in a cemetery? Dwelling in a cemetery where people discard corpses, thus one is a dweller in a cemetery. How is one a sitter? Sitting upright on a bed or a small bed, or sitting on grass spread on the ground, passing the time, not leaning the back or body against a bed or a small bed, a wall, a tree, or grass spread on the ground, thus one is a sitter. How is one a dweller wherever? Dwelling on grass or leaves spread on the ground, and also only spreading the grass or leaves once, sleeping only on that, not changing or altering it again and again, thus one is a dweller wherever. Why are these called purifying qualities? For example, wool or cotton, when it is not combed, not separated, not kneaded, it is tangled, not soft, not light, thus it cannot be used for spinning thread or doing sewing work. Similarly, here, some are attached to alms, loving alms and always clinging to them; some are attached to Dharma robes, loving Dharma robes and always clinging to them; some are attached to dwellings, loving dwellings and always clinging to them, these purifying qualities, just as for the sake of dwelling in perfect conduct, make the mind tamed, upright, gentle, capable, subdued, suitable, therefore they are called purifying qualities.
